'Fn' Key stuck!

Hello!

New on the forum and have been 'using' Windows 8 for a few months now. I'd love to love it, but I'm still struggling...

I'm on a Samsung laptop with a numerical keypad, but the Function key seems to have stuck. If I go to close a tab using Ctrl-F4, options come up to connect a second screen. In fact if I just press F4, that happens. My menu key is on the 0 key of the numerical keypad, so even when Num Lock is on I cannot use the zero - I just get a menu up.

Can anybody help, please?! This is a £700 (about $1,000!) computer, so it is very frustrating that it isn't working as I'd like it! I've sometimes got to the point of going back to using an old laptop I set up on Ubuntu as it seems to work faster, despite the i7 processor and 8Gb of ram in this one...

It sounds like a defective keyboard. If its still under warranty, contact Samsung to get it repaired. If not, start looking for a replacement. Its a little bit of a task, but they can be replaced. I recently replaced one on an ACER laptop. I found instructions on YouTube on the procedure to replace it.

Try to look in the BIOS for any Fn or NumLock or Keyboard button options... see if by changing one of those might reset the keyboard state. Otherwise go with fireberd's post here above.

Good luck.

Yes - Sometimes the Function Keys are disables in the BIOS - Have you altered your BIOS settings at any time? If you have, try to set it back to normal.

If not - Well, then it is a bad keyboard, they'll replace it for you for free, if it is under warranty.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Thank you everybody!

I just got a Win 8 update, as they do... Look: 0102030405 - it isn't stuck any more. It's great that it's now working, but of course that means I have no idea why it stopped in the first place or why it is now working again!

If I get stuck again or get any more info, I'll come back to you - otherwise it looks as though we may never know. I may have to save this page on favourites on my Ubuntu laptop too, in case this system gets really problematic. :(

If you feel like trying to work out what happened, feel free to guide me through any steps to uncover bios history etc, if such a thing exists! I'm open to looking.

Best wishes and have a good weekend,
Thomas

And after a restart?....

The standby is messy. Well, that's why updates are still released: because there still are issues.

Don't lose hope, see if your manufacturer has any BIOS updates, also upgrade all possible drivers first if possible.

I had this same issue but rather than a broken keyboard or altering the BIOS, my numlock key was stuck on which seems to enable the fn keys on my keyboard. Maybe this is your issue.
