No sound or mic after upgrade from W7

Hi. I have a laptop that came with W7 64bit. My headphone set worked fine - sound and mic. I upgraded to W8, and now there's no sound or mic. I've followed various W8 checklists but the system says everything is working. The same headset works fine on my WXP laptop.

I downloaded and installed Realtek High Definition Audio Driver for W8 64bit. No change.

What else can I try?

First perform your windows updates, your solution may already be in the updates.

You can browse through the optional updates and see if your audio or chipset drivers are there..

I upgraded to W8 about 2-3 months ago, but my 'everyday' laptop is still my old Windows XP machine (am I allowed to say 'XP' on this forum?), and I only noticed the lack of sound when using my 'new' laptop - now about 1 year old. I'm getting there slowly! How to I get to the optional updates? Thank you.
