Solved How do I install Xerox Phaser 6200DP

I haven’t been able to install this printer. When I go to add printer it is not in the list or in the updated list. I went to the Xerox website and downloaded this driver.
Phaser 6200 File Download

In the folder where the files are downloaded are .ppd files for the various printers supported and an .ini file. There is no install.exe or setup.exe file.

When I start the add printer wizard Win8 sees the printer on the network. In the next screen I choose “have disk” and browse to the .ini file. A list of printers appears and I select my printer and click next. The next screen asks for a name for the printer and offers a default name. When I click next on this screen a box with a processing bar opens that says installing printer.

Then it goes bad. It loops back to the printer name box and the printer is not installed.

Any ideas what I could try?

I tried disconnecting the network cable, connecting the printer with a USB cable, and repeating the install again. In this case windows installed the printer with a generic USB print driver even though I told it to use the downloaded driver. Of course that's the wrong driver and the printer doesn't work.

From what I find, this is a 2002 printer. Its doubtful that it supports anything other than XP or earlier. Have you tried installing the driver in the Windows XP compatibility mode? That looks like the best possible option.

If you are referring to the Compatibility mode, RIGHT click on the install icon for the drivers and then LEFT click Properties. One of the panel tabs will be compatibility. You can set it to run (install) in XP compatibility mode. This MAY get it working.

....... RIGHT click on the install icon for the drivers ........

That is what you mean, right? You are expecting an install.exe file amoung the downloded driver files. There isn't one.

Thanks, I will remember:
Right click installation file
Choose properties
Choose compatibility
Choose XP mode

If there is no install program, and you can't find one, you may be sunk.

TA DA!:dinesh:

At devices and printers choose add printer.
At the choose your printers window click windows update to get the entire list of printers with Windows 8 support.
If your printer is not in the list select a different model printer with a similar model number. In my case I picked Phaser 6250 instead of 6200.
Continue with the printer install wizard.

Thank you Xerox tech support for suggesting I try a driver for a different model printer.

Never give up!

Not so fast! I got excited that it installed and printed a test page and posted before checking things. It only prints in black and white, no color. I tried a bunch of different model printer drivers. Only the Phaser printer models worked and they all installed the same driver. Opening printer properties, it is clearly a black & white driver. Xerox no longer supports the printer and will not be updating the driver so "Th, Th, That's all folks!"

The "old reliable" printer may still work, but it is an "old" model and no longer supported. Start saving $$ for a current and compatible model.

Yes Keith, that is the driver file I linked in my first post. Runnig that file created a folder with .ppd files, an .ini file and no .exe files. But what I did not do was run that downloaded .exe file in compatibility mode. So I have one more thing to try.
