    SATA/USB dock problem

Device is external sata/usb dock which has a 250Gb sata 2.5" Hdd intstalled.

Did have 2 sata (HDD and CDROM) on internal ports 1 and 2. both worked fine (Hdd now in dock so I know Hdd OK and brand new cables fitted).
Put new 740Gb sata on port 2 and an external dock on port 3. 740 HDD works fine but get errors in device manager Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43).

On boot get stop error atapi device is incompatible.

Dock is a Dynamode HKD-E and they have been most helpful (NOT) saying you don't need driver as completely plug and play and are not answering emails at moment.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

Im a little lost here.. Looks like youre introducing 2 drives into a system at the same time.

    One is connected internally

the other is connected externally via an internal sata cable?

Why arent you using the USB cable to connect the external dock to the external USB?

When you say ports you are saying the internal SATA ports correct?

Sorry to confuse you..... Sata ports 1-4 are internal on M/board

    My original config was

    sata 1 250Gb Hdd
    sata 2 DVD/CD
    sata 3 150Gb Hdd
    sata 4 not used

    new config

    sata 1 750Gb Hdd
    sata 2 DVD/CD
    sata 3 150Gb Hdd
sata 4 250Gb Hdd now connected via external sata hub (Dynamode HDK-E sata/usb dock )

What I am trying to sort is on boot I get stop error "atapi incompatible" Press F1 to continue. When I press F1 system boots normal.

    Hope this is clearer

I think i know what you want to do, but first I need to know which drive is your OS on? 250 or 750 GB?

Hi Brooklyn 567 thank you for the reply.

Op system is on the 740 sata internal although it is also on the 250 I am trying to connect so I can format and get rid of os.

I suppose I could put it back to internal and format that way if I had to.

    Regards

Some SATA ports cannot be used for optical drives--I do not know if this is your situation. I would have the DVD on the last SATA port, just in case.

So you have two internal drives and one internal DVD. The dock has the one drive you want to format. If you boot without the drive in the dock, do you still get the error message. If you remove the dock, do you get the error? I assume, since it is a dock, you can hot plug the drive.

Will have a try and see what happens - will come back 5-10 mins

    Results:

    1.No Hdd Atapi incompatible
    2.No Dock ditto
    3. Dock on sata only ditto
    4. Dock on sata with Hdd ditto not visible in explorer
    5. Dock on usb with Hdd ditto visible in explorer and usable - do not understand why suddenly appears
    6. Dock on sata and usb with hdd ditto ditto on usb connection

So I guess from this I have a bad connection or cable even though they are new. Would you agree ?

    Regards

Whatever drive you have on the external dock, make sure its not set as master, set it to slave..

Your bios might be set to boot from external devices first, you may need to change that if you plan on leaving the external device running all the time..

I dont turn on my ext dock til after my computer starts.

Im still wondering how you connected and external device to a sata port and not an esata port..

you have cables hanging out from your motherboard to the dock?

    Hi again

Not sure about jumper settings. There are 4 pins not used or marked on the drive so I presume they are for jumpers but use would be by trial and error. Drive is now showing in Device Manager as MDT MD25 00BEVS-00USTO USB DEVICE so will do a Google .

I can also try turning on after start instead of leaving on.

Yet again sorry it is me regarding connection. I have a backplate adapter so internal cable goes to backplate then a sata to esata cable goes from backplate to dock.

As I think you mentioned earlier do not know why I have sata and usb connected at the same time. This is probably causing some of the problem but still do not see why bios should say incompatible when there is nothing attached.

    Thanks again for replying

    Regards

Dont guess at the pin settings, they are labeled on the harddisk sticker..

Only connect the ESATA cable its much much faster than USB2.0

Try to boot that way, if problems then leave dock powered off until pc starts to boot, then switch it on..

Having both cables connected may have been the issue..

Also change boot sequence to HDD0 then CD/DVD then external devices.. you can always temporarily bypass that order by hitting F12 or F11 (boot options) during boot.
