Print Spooler running but print messages advise otherwise

I have a fairly new PC computer running Win 8 64bit. Initial setup went off without a hitch. Wireless printers and such all worked fine.

Now, I select "print" from Microsoft Word, or Notepad, or any program for that matter, nothing happens, i.e. no print que, no printer page, nada. My control panel shows several printers installed. I have tried to delete all printers to start from scratch, however, the printer icons pop back up as quickly as I delete them.

I tried to install a newly purchased printer, but a message was returned stating, "no printer spooler service running" or something to that effect. I then opened the service page and turned the print spooler "on' in automatic mode. Nothing changed. It still returns a message about "Print Spooler not running", even though it is turned on in the services page!

I might add that this computer is part of a home sharing network with two other desktop PCs. They both perform flawlessly, interfacing wirelessly with the two HP printers on-line. The other desktops are running win 7 64bit.

I am truly out of airspeed and ideas. Thank you for your help.

have replaced the memory board battery; loaded memory defaults and saved; install of win 8 Pro is painfully slow...WAY too slow. Takes over 10 min just to load splash screen.
