LG 23ET83 touchscreen issues.

I just purchased the LG 23ET83 touchscreen for my Windows 8 Desktop, and it works great as a monitor. The touchscreen capability works fine when it's functional, but I'm having a weird issue with it.

It seems like at random, more often when I launch a game or wake my computer from sleep, the touchscreen functionality stops working, a strange box with my cursor stuck in it appears on the left side of the screen, and a "ghosted" cursor appears if I use my mouse, moving between the actual cursor position and this area where it's "stuck" on the left side of the screen.

The ghosted cursor works normally, but it becomes invisible if I stop moving my mouse, and the touchscreen doesn't work at all while it's in this state. If I unplug the monitor from the USB port and plug it back in, it starts working perfectly again.

Why does it keep failing in this particular way, and why does it need to be reconnected frequently? My Surface Pro never has this issue with the touchscreen, although I'm not sure that's a good comparison.

did you try basic things like using a different USB cable and also trying a different USB port? I've seen USB ports intermittently work due to a bad motherboard.

also, if it's the same region on the monitor all the time, it's probably a defective touchscreen. something is wrong with the layers of the screen.

I have tried a different USB port. Haven't tried a different cable yet, though; the touchscreen works fine when it is working. It just stops registering touch at some point. Also, the USB ports work fine with other USB devices.

The touchscreen actually has no problem registering touch in that area when it is working, and using that part of the screen doesn't increase the chances of a problem. It usually does appear on the left edge of the monitor, though. It's always fixed temporarily by unplugging it and plugging it back in, though.

EDIT: Actually, it looks like I was wrong about it not registering touch at all. The Charms bar won't come up via touch, I lose the ability to switch between applications using touch, and nothing on the Desktop will respond to touch. But I can still use touch on the Metro interface to activate tiles, and to work within Metro applications.

I was actually able to remove the box that "traps" my cursor. It seems even the slightest smudge on the screen registers as a "touch" whenever it gets like this. I just had to clean a nearly invisible fingerprint off the screen, and that part of the problem stopped happening entirely. But nonetheless, touch does still intermittently stop working for the things I mentioned above, even though my cursor looks normal and there's no weird box when it happens now.

that's some weird behavior. did you try out the calibration in the control panel for touch? if you did, try to reset it to default and then see if everything works. if you did not try the calibration, try doing so.

for me, I remember doing the calibration which messed up everything on my laptop. same thing happened with my Acer touchscreen. I hit the reset and avoided the calibration and everything worked perfectly after that.

it's strange that it would work for some things and not other things. does this monitor come with any drivers?

I'm still thinking your monitor is on the edge of functional tolerance. The way a capacitive screen works is when you touch the screen, some of the charge off the screen is pulled away by your finger. This decrease in charge on the screen is interpreted by the monitor's firmware/software to indicate where the touch occurred on the monitor. If a fingerprint is enough to get the monitor to malfunction, something's probably wrong with the monitor.

is there a dedicated forum for LG monitors that you checked out to see if anyone else has had this problem and if it's a bad monitor or a problem to be worked around?

I googled your monitor and it seems pretty cool! dual HDMI sounds great.

Calibrating it was the first thing I tried, and that helped with some things, but it caused the Charms bar to stop appearing. So I reset the calibration and the monitor worked normally again. Calibrating and reverting works as well as unplugging it from the USB port.

No, there are no drivers available for it at all. I checked. I would have liked to install some manufacturer drivers to see if that helped, but it seems like they just expect me to use the default Windows drivers.

I really hope that isn't the case... to be honest, I got a good deal on this monitor, purchased it from Newegg, and really can't afford to deal with return shipping for such an ill-defined problem. They'll probably report it as working and refuse to replace it anyway when they test it out. At that point, I'll probably just stop using the touchscreen functionality. It works fine as a monitor, and that's beyond the amount of time and money I'm willing to spend making this work. If it's a hardware problem, I'm basically screwed. :/

I'll see if I can find one, but I haven't heard of such a thing. Thanks for the idea. :)

I buy from Newegg regularly. They'll accept that it's nonfunctional and replace it readily.

Shipping is another matter... :(
