How are you connecting this HDD to your windows 8 PC? Have you made all the connections from the HDD to the mobo....eg data cable and power cable if you installed HDD internally to windows 8 PC?

Dear Dan,

Firstly let the system start by booting itself with the hard drive installed within the system.. after the complete startup of your system connect the external hard drive at the usb port.. now check the status...may it resolve your issue...make sure that during startup the external one is not connected..

I tried that to............it still doesn't work. If I look in "my computer" I don't even see it in there in the removable storage. I know the usb port is woeking because I tried a usb san disk and that works. I also know the external hard drive works because I had it hooked up on my laptop............I think is the stupid windows 8...........why couldn't they leave well enough alone!!!!

If you want windows to recognize it as soon as you plug it in without having to go through DISK MGMT is to :

First recognize the Drive through DISK MGMT and assign it a drive letter

Then go to COMPUTER select the removable drive then (right click) then (properties)

Select (hardware)

Find your harddrive in the list then select it, then click (properties), then (policies)

Select (better performance) and not (quick removal)

Thats it.. you will have to use the (Safely Remove Hardware) icon in your system tray before removing this drive from now on to make sure there is nothing in the cache waiting to be written, but that only takes a few seconds, and saves the BIG TO DO of DISK MGMT everytime you plug it in...

Brooklyn!

Could this be a secure boot issue?

If that older drive has an active boot partition then secure boot might not allow it to be recognized.

If you temporarily disable secure boot, it may be recognized.

Or maybe if you turn off the active partition boot bit it may work. You'd have to do that in another computer of course or run a boot disk with a partition manager.

Hi Dan , you might like to check out the recent thread from me , I had nearly the same problem.

I resolved it easily when I realised that the drive I was trying to connect was still set to "master" it was a main drive from my old computer.

I reset the pins/dipswitches to slave and everything burst into life.

Hope this helps
