Hello.

They are called mounting adapter brackets. You can get them from amazon (here) or any computer parts store in your area. If it's for a laptop, look for 2.5" mounting adapter bracket.

2.5 to 3.5 is if you are going to install it to a pc which uses 3.5" hdd. You only need 2.5" as that is the size of laptop hdd. Some brackets are dual. Read the description carefully.

I couldn't see a Samsung 840 User Manual on the Samsung website, but the 830 User Manual can be found HERE. If the 840 is the same as the 830, it seems as though there's three different kits depending whether you're fitting it to a laptop, a desktop or just the bare drive.

In the laptop kit there appears to be a 7mm to 9.5mm mounting spacer included in the kit (as per the below photos). I've just done a quick Amazon search and strangely enough the mounting spacer doesn't seem to be available separately. Have you got them in your hands, as in the instructions it says 'if needed', so I'm not sure whether it would be possible to fit it without the bracket. Or looking at the picture in the THIS video, maybe make something out of cardboard? Without seeing it, it's difficult to tell.

Hi there
Most laptops I've ever used / opened up the SSD will just normally fit straight on to the connectors WITHOUT needing any mounting screws etc. The Laptop cover assembly / panel piece holds the whole thing in place.

Sometimes there's a piece of rubber at one of the ends to ensure a really tight fit, but could you open up your laptop and take a mobile phone pic of the slot where you insert the SSD.

If the old laptop HDD has a small caddy this will identically will fit on the SSD - these can be different for each laptop - but often you won't even need these.

All the SATA cable thingy's etc are for mounting in a 3.5 inch slot on a standard Desktop - the SATA cables are for connecting to the mobo. On a laptop none of this is necessary - the SSD just plugs straight in to the two sets of pins and is a reasonably rigid fit.

Incidentally Samsung 840 256 GB SSD -- Great choice - currently fastest performer out there for the price.

Cheers
jimbo

Not only that, but IIRC SandForce controllers used by some other brands rely on compression to obtain their performance, whereas the Samsung and Marvell controllers don't. So, for those of us who use software encrypted drives, we can't benefit from the SandForce compression, as encrypted data is incompressible. Therefore, we're better off with something like the Samsung's, where it doesn't matter if the data is incompressible or not.

@citroen - Glad you got it sorted.

ARC 1020, it is just a perception that SandForce relies only on compression to get optimal performce. Have a look @ this link which has techical data sheet info on Intel 520 SSD explaining how intelligently Intel uses SandForce controllers to optimize data compression & hence aim to get best possible performance.

SF drives do rely on compression, that is a fact bud. It of course cannot compress all data but it does compress what it can.

I would take the sammy every time over any SF drive. Even Intel's. As a matter of fact I did just that, sold my two 520's and now on two Samsung 840 pro's. One for OS and one for storage.

I generally avoid sandforce controllers, too many problems historically.
