Windows not recognising External Hard drive

    Hello,

Sorry if this is a silly question with a simple answer but I'm not terribly tech savvy and am pulling my hair out over this!

I recently purchased a WD 1TB external portable hard drive. When I first got it it was immediately recognised by my laptop (a 2 day old Asus Ultrabook S400C). This is my first time with Windows 8 so I am still learning to navigate it.

The first thing I did was transfer 650gb of movies and music across. I didn't format the hard drive first, maybe that was my first mistake. My files were still recognisable on my laptop and my WD TV Live media centre. The next day all of a sudden my meda player wouldn't recognise it and when I plugged it back into my laptop it also cannot see it.

The device can be seen in device manager (when I click on properties it says it's working corectly), but not in the drives list in my computer. It is showing as "Disc 2" 'Not Iniitialised' and when I click on 'Initialise' and choose 'MBR' and hit OK it comes up with this error msg: 'The request could not be performed due to an I/O device error'.

Any ideas on where to start? I don't mnd if I have to format it to get it to work but I can't even get that option to appear.

    Thanks in advance.

When you unplugged it from the laptop. Did you do a safely remove by clicking on the icon in the bottom right of the task bar or just plainly unplugged it ?

@topgundcp: Thanks for taking the time to reply... sorry to say I just unplugged it. My husband told me I should be safely removing everything so I will be more diligent in future about it!

Yes, sometimes when you don't remove it properly and if the HD is doing some READ/WRITE operation, it can corrupt the HD. If you don't have any important data on it, just reformat it and recopy your data again.

    1. Hold down WIN key then press X, click on Disk Management
    2. Look in the list for the HD, make sure to select the correct one, you can tell by the size of the HD and initialize it. The reason you don't see it in the computer list because it does not have a drive letter assigned to it. After initialize completed, it will prompt you to format and also assign a letter for it.

    Thanks for your reply.

When I locate it in Disk Management and click on initialise it is still doing what it was doing yesterday: It is showing as "Disc 2" 'Not Iniitialised' and when I click on 'Initialise' and choose 'MBR' and hit OK it comes up with this error msg: 'The request could not be performed due to an I/O device error'.

    Any thoughts?

Just looked in properties, no option to delete volumes, it's greyed out.
