Here are 2 screen shots that I made to show you:
The first one is my Disk 3 and currently assigned to Drive letter F:, it is currently Online and if I right click on it, a popup menu display an option that I can put it Offline.

The second one is I put Disk 3 Offline, the drive letter is no longer assigned to F: and if I right click on it, I'll get an option to put it Online again.

I can see that Disk 2 of Type Unknown, Please right click on the right region of the disk, you should get a different popup option and tell me what it is.

Windows disk management is somewhat limited. There's a command line utility called: Diskpart which you can run from the command prompt but it is hard to provide help online. You might have to use a third party Partition Manger to fix it. Don't worry, it's free. Here's the link to download a free home version of Partition manager:
Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online

After download. Please install it and try to initialize from the program.
Good luck and please report back if you need some more help.

    Hi again,

I installed and ran the partition program, however when I go into it and click on the HDD it's not giving me any options... can you advise if I'm doing something incorrectly or how I am supposed to proceed from here. I've attached a screenshot of it.

Also my comp recognised the drive this morning for a moment, so I used it to format the drive, but now it's telling me the drive is write protected. The drive is now empty if that helps with my next step!

    Thanks
