If I plug in a drive (via a hub) and it does not appear in the drive list, is there a way to force a scan for new drives?

Hello tkavan,

While in Device Manager, you can click on the toolbar button below to have it scan for hardware changes to hopefully detect it.

scan_for_new_hardware.jpg

If not, then try the tutorial below by using the Win+R Run dialog for the "Add Hardware" wizard to see if it may.
If that still doesn't help, then you may need to try a different port.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Thanks for the tip. Shawn. I wasn't aware of that little Device Manager button.

I have three external drives, and all work when connected directly to my laptop. But when I use a (small) USB hub, only one is recognized. Maybe I should be using a powered hub?

Thanks,
Tom

What brand and model is the USB hub?

I'll do some research on it to see if this is a common issue with it, and if there may be a solution other than connecting the drive directly.

Thanks Brink. Info below. BTW my laptop is an Asus X55U, if that makes a difference.

Since external drives provide their own power, the USB doesn't need to be powered.

You might try the USB hub connected to another port on the laptop to see if it may just be an issue with that one port.

In addition, if you happen to have a desktop PC to test with, plug the USB hub into a back panel USB port that's directly off the motherboard to see how it the USB hub works. If the USB port on the PC is connected via cable instead of direct, then it may be an issue with that connection to where it only sees one device versus it may see them all on a direct USB port.

Sometimes it depends on where you have it plugged in. Try the other USB ports.

Since external drives provide their own power, the USB doesn't need to be powered.

I think you've identified my problem. Two of my three external drives have a power connection, which I wasn't using because I thought they would get power from the laptop. When I connected them to the power bar, all worked OK and they were recognized by the computer.

Thanks for taking the time to help me.
