Hey guys, have any of you manage to install Intel Matrix Storage Manager? Everytime I try to install it it says my computer does not meet the minimum requirements. Without it I can't switch from IDE to AHCI for my SSD...

  • OS
    Windows 7 64bit
Firstly I assume you had AHCI enabled in the bios before installing Windows 8.

So, just try installing the matrix driver in compatibility mode with Windows 7 or Vista : To install a driver/program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with windows 7 / vista etc. - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

If that doesn't work post back what controller is installed in device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

I installed W8 in IDE mode because it keeps giving me formatting errors when I leave it in AHCI. I have already tried running it with admin rights/w7 compatibility with no luck. I'll check the controller after work today and let you know. Thanks for your help.

You need to do this registry fix to enable AHCI then reset the bios to AHCI - those formatting errors maybe a sign your hard drive is on the way out - strange you have no problems when using IDE mode though.

Go here and follow the instructions on how to enable AHCI : Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

When you have the above sorted out download and run a hard drive diagnostic tool to see if there are any problems with your hard drive : HD Diagnostic

I gave up and just reinstalled Windows with AHCI mode enabled and providing the AHCI drivers during installation...

I read up a bunch of links telling me to change:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
which is nonexistent in W8...but now I see it's actually:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV

Only if I read this earlier... Thanks for your help any way!

Strange, I installed Windows 8 but made the mistake that my HDD was still on IDE, im using a SSD as bootdrive too.
After installation i recognized my mistake and went to bios/efi and changed IDE to AHCI, i have an Asrock 970 Extreme3 motherboard.
Windows 8 still booted fine no errors/bsod, but I did notice that in games my HDD would go to 100% utilization and it would hang for 30secs or so.
So I reinstalled it with AHCI enabled this time.
