Solved HDD constantly trashing

Hi,
I've recently installed Windows 8 on an Asus X201E. There is an audiable constant disk trashing, although the HDD LED doesn't blink & the Performance monitor in the task manager also doesn't indicate any excessive disk access (literally 0% when nothing is going on). What could cause this? Besides the annoying sound, I'm worried about the disk wearing out.

Well somewhere I read that when your pc is inactive and starts thrashing then, while actually accessing the disk, it's possibly that it's defragmenting (or otherwise optimalizing its hdd) it over time. But this is during normal usage...

I've Googled it and some people say it's Indexing. I don't find a place to disable it to see it that's what it is. Is Search the same thing? That is in Turn Windows features off or on.

If the disk "trashing" (thrashing?) is audible then that might be csuse for concern, it might even be failing.Figure out who the drive's maker is (probably Seagate since the laptop is ASUS like mine), go to their website or Google, and look for a utility download for your specific drive.install it and check the drive's health and bad sector count.

Forgot to say, but also manually defrag the disk, and run a checkdisk (CHKDSK) in Windows to check the drive. Use the same function to scan for/repair bad sectors. I also recommend HDD Regenerator for this. I prefer 3rd pty software for defragging (Defraggler, UltimateDefrag). And if the drive maker doesnt have software available then just look for generic software elsewhere that does the same thing. You should also use said utility to check the drive's SMART status/health. Lastly, it might also help if you use a RAMdisk software to create a drive in RAM to reduce pressure/activity on the disk. Primo RAMdisk and FancyCache are great for this. They're not quite the same so check it out. Just make sure you have alot of RAM. sry for the longwinded post and no spacing, im tapping this out on my phone. Hope this helped!

Thanks caperjack for the reply. If I uncheck this will it downgrade the performance very much?

I turned off Indexing. It didn't stop the noise. I don't really see any difference in performance with it turned off.

According to this article Indexing Service is no longer supported as of Windows XP and is unavailable for use as of Windows 8. Instead, use Windows Search for client side search.
Indexing Service (Windows)

Unfortunately this process can eat a lot of resources even when your PC is sitting idle, Windows Search service is updating the Windows.edb, this file can become quite large (many GB's) and will cause a lot of activity on the hard disk and will also degrade your PC performance.
Windows.edb is located in a hidden folder: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows so you might want to check this file to see how big it is.
If you don't use Search function often, you might want to disable this service: Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services and disable "Windows Search" then you can safely delete Windows.edb

There are a lot of services that are enabled by default when you install Windows, some of those can be disabled to improve the system performance. For example, I always disable services such as: Remote Registry, Smart Card, Remote Access, Fax service, Windows Search etc...

For Windows Search replacement, I use a small freeware Everything Search: Everything Search Engine
which does a better job than the built in Windows Search.

Having said all that. When a hard disk starts making noise, it is a sign of it going bad so you might want to back up your important data just in case.

I can confirm that Voidtools' Everything Search is awesome, it misses absolutely nothing. I do use Linux sometimes, wish Voidtools would release a version for indexing files in Linux. However, I personally wouldnt disable indexing/Windows Search if you have a powerful machine, I havent noticed a big performance difference on my laptop when it (indexing/WS) is enabled. If you really dont need it or have low system resources then turn it off if you wish. And even though ES is a good app I'm not convinced that it can do everything indexing/WS can do. I'm sure it plays a helpful but not necessarily vital role in Windows.

As for what I said before, I would like to clarify by saying that Primo RAMDisk is for creating disk drives that live in your system's RAM, you can even install stuff to them and the drive will persist across reboots if you configure things that way. I've had stellar performance when installing/running demanding games from a RAMDisk. There are other similar apps but Primo RAMDisk is the best by far and has the least issues. As for FancyCache (by the same company), it's a bit different. It's not a virtual disk drive,(NOT disc [emulation], like DAEMON Tools, Alcohol 120%, etc), it's actually similar but is a caching app that acts similar to the SuperFetch caching service found in more recent versions of Windows. Both of these might help in your case (Clint & Visterius) because as I said before they reduce pressure on your HDD. The RAMDisk is much faster than a HDD since whatever is running from it is located in RAM/memory. And FancyCache will simply cache your most commonly used apps/docs, etc, which also reduces read/writes to the HDD, which might reduce thrashing.

I've only been messing around with this kind of stuff for awhile myself, it might help you, might not, but dont take my word for it, since I'm no expert.
As for my advice on checking for bad sectors, monitoring your drive's SMART data, defragging, etc, well, that's just good advice that any PC user should know.

Hope I was able to help or maybe give you a few ideas. And like everyone else has said, back up your drive just in case, since it could be failing. Better safe than sorry..........

Please read this post and you can see what Windows Search created.

In this case it's 22 GB but I have seen case with > 100 GB. Yes, initially if this file is small then you don't see any effect on the performance but if this file is getting too big then Windows Search will bring the PC down to its knee trying to index such a huge file,

My HD is a WD Black Desktop 1TB SATA 6.0 GB/s 7200 RPM. It's about a year old. It's been making this noise since new. I've never had a problem with it. All the test that I have ran says it's OK. It just makes a thump noise about every 5 seconds.

If all the tests passed then you are OK. However, don't rely on how new your HD is. There are cases with brand new HD D.O.A. To further eliminating unnecessary disk access and improve system performance:

  1. Temporarily disable Windows Search as said in my previous post
  2. Windows Update set as: Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
  3. Control Panel->All Control Panel Items->Action Center->Change Action Center settings, click on Customer Experience Improvement Program settings and select No

    - Expand the node Microsoft->Windows->Application Experience, right click and disable: AitAgent, ProgramDataUpdater

I am a little confused. You said you made changes and then you did a system restore, meaning you undid what you've changed then rebooted. Do I understand right or am I missing something ?

Maybe you guys hear the fan malfunctioning and not the HDD. 0% usage is 0%.

To make sure:
Go to the BIOS and run a disk check and see what you got.

@Clint
For DELL reboot and press F12 to load dell diagnostics.

@Visterius
For ASUS see BIOS (DEL key?) and maybe other shortcuts I've skipped.
ASUS - X201E

You can also check for drive errors in Windows (chkdsk) (right click on disk, check).

I am a little confused. You said you made changes and then you did a system restore, meaning you undid what you've changed then rebooted. Do I understand right or am I missing something ?
No topgundcp. I was typing faster than I was thinking. What I should have said was I created a Restore Point, did the changes then rebooted.

Maybe you guys hear the fan malfunctioning and not the HDD. 0% usage is 0%.
At the time I did the Snip, it was at 0%. You can see the little bumps in the image. The fan makes a different sound.
