I don't seem to have a dvd drive listed in control panel. Does anyone have any suggestions as to have to get it in the drive list?

Do you have an actual DVD drive installed in your system? Is is connected properly, right cable connections to the correct ports? Are the drivers installed?

Yes I do. I was seen in my win 7 install. nothing changed except a clean install of win 8.

Win+X->Device Manager->DVD/CD-ROM Drivers
- Do you see your DVD listed there ? if not, check for loose cable
- If DVD listed but has a yellow exclamation mark, right click on it and select uninstall then reboot your PC. Doing this will re-install the driver
- If the above steps failed, open elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow
