    Router Question

I was using a router to access the web with my smart phone. I no longer use a smartphone and have gone back to a home phone.
The router is still hooked up and I was wondering, is the computer utilizing it in any way?
Should I leave it hooked up?

    Thanks,
    James

Just turn on the air plane mode in your smart phone. It will disconnect from the router.

Not sure if you understood my question.
    Forget the smartphone.
If the router is still hooked-up to my computer and modem is my computer utilizing the router in any way? Or should I disconnect it?

If your PC is not wired to the internet but works in the WiFi (typically laptops do that), then you need the router.

Why don't you switch it off for a test (just unplug the power) and see whether your PC still connects.

But if you have only 1 computer and that is wired, you could connect the ethernet cable directly to the modem. The added advantage of the router is that it has an extra firewall which gives you additional protection.

The added protection is what I couldn't think of. So, it really makes no difference other than the firewall?

If you don't care about the firewall, you can attach directly to the modem and keep the router out of the loop.

As long as it's already there I'll just leave it.

    Thanks much,

I think you are right. I would have done that too. Maybe one day you have a laptop or a small tablet. Then it will be useful. Or a visitor with such a device.

I installed my router mostly for the Nexus7 tablet. My desktop and my 2 laptops here were hard wired via a switch. But now the laptops are untethered too and use the WiFi.
