USB 3.0 problem on a new build

I have a strange issue on a new build, concerning my Intel USB 3.0 ports. They seem to work fine for USB 2.0 devices, but my front panel ones will detect, show the contents, and then disconnect my USB 3.0 flash drive. I know of some issues with Intel's USB 3.0 controllers, and the solution (click here) to resolve them. I had to do so on my Ultrabook.

But this is where it gets strange. My rear USB 3.0 ports work fine with the USB 3.0 flash drive. I can move data back and forth at blazing speeds. It's just my front ports, which I thought were also controlled by the Intel chipset.

I have no issues in Device Manager, and all devices are installed (no unknown devices, etc). The front ports work fine currently with USB 2.0 devices, and I know they function properly under Windows 7 with the Intel drivers loaded. So, my question is this...should I follow the steps above, like I had to on my Ultrabook? I'm afraid of causing an issue with the rear ports, but I guess it is a simple enough rollback.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across an issue like this concerning front ports. I would have expected all of my Intel ports to have the issue...not just the front two.

My board is a Gigabyte GA-Z77-UD3H and the case is a Corsair 300R.

Just curious as to how you installed those front USB ports. See image below:

I used the case's front port connector that goes directly into the port you have circled next to the DIMM slots.

On your board, you have the chipset USB Intel controller, and a VIA controller. In Windows 8, the USB 3.0 drivers should be the same.

The back Intel 3.0 ports are not working, the ones under the RJ-45 connector, correct? The remaining 4 (VIA controller) are working?

What drivers have you installed from the OEM?

If it makes a difference, my personal preference for Windows 8 is to install the Windows 8 drivers the OEM has supplied. You will probably not see any for USB 3.0. But you might consider installing at least the chipset drivers for the board if you have not already done so.

The chipset drivers for the board were put on immediately after the OS was finished installing. I haven't loaded any additional USB drivers, only what Windows 8 brought to the table by default.

As for the back ports, I only tried the two at the top, as denoted by the KB_USB3 port/block in the above diagram, and they worked perfectly with my USB 3.0 flash drive.

I'll try some of the others in the back, and get back to you.

Hi there
can't really answer your question -- but those trains are AWESOME. Thanks for the pics.

Since we have the same chipset, possibly some of the bios settings are the same. Mine are listed below so that you might compare to yours.

Intel USB 2.0 EHCI Controller Enabled
Legacy USB Support Enabled
Legacy USB 3.0 Support Enabled
Intel xHCI Mode Smart Auto (other options, auto, enabled, disabled)
EHCI Hand-off Disabled

Below these settings are settings to enable or disable specific USB ports...

Chipset:

Up to 4 USB 3.0/2.0 ports (2 ports on the back panel, 2 ports available through the internal USB header)
* In Windows XP, the Intel USB 3.0 ports can support up to USB 2.0 transfer speed.
Up to 6 USB 2.0/1.1 ports (available through the internal USB headers)

VIA VL800 chip:

Up to 4 USB 3.0/2.0 ports on the back panel

It looks like the USB3.0 that run on the Chipset is the problem. On the rear you will have 4 USB 3.0 ports from the VIA chip and 2 from the Chipset. My guess if you test all 6 USB 3.0 ports on the rear 2 of them will fail just like the 2 front ports.

Hi there
have you tried running hwinfo -- this will show all your hardware properly -- then check the USB3 data

Download and run the Portable version of HWinfo -- note it takes a few minutes - you might be tempted to think your machine has seized up - it hasn't.

Get it from here
