my observation on using a couple of USB3 small passport 2TB self powered disk drives when I connect then to a powered standard usb2 hub is that they perform FAR FASTER than external USB 2 disk drives --especially the self powered small pocket size one's.
So if you are buying external drives --even if you don't have USB3 ports on your machine it's still worth going for the USB 3 drives.
