Hello everyone,

Recently I've been following the news about the latest windows 8 (pro) tablets and I'm very interested in buying an asus transformer book (if they finally decide to release it...). Now, on my main pc and laptop, I still use windows 7, so I don't exactly know how windows 8 works and what the possibilities are, so maybe you can help me out with the following question: If I copy a file, like a movie, document,... from my pc to my tablet, is it then accesible from both 'desktop' and 'metro' interface or can you only open it when working in 'desktop' mode?

Depending on the file, yes.

If it's a music file like mp3, wma, or wmv files and such, it will play in the Xbox Music app and/or Music Info app if you install it. With video, if it's a typical common codec, it should play in the Xbox Video app. The same goes for on the Desktop.

But, I think later this month, the VLC Player development team might release their VLC player app for Windows 8, that is the literal Swiss army knife of media files, and they'll be taking the WHOLE Desktop app to a metro app.

It'll work fine pretty much.

That would be great indeed, I use VLC on my desktop as well^^ The reason I wanted to know this, is because on the asus transformer book, you can switch off the notebook mode, so that the battery lasts longer, but then you can only use 'tablet mode', which is just the metro interface I think, or do I understand it wrong? So I thought, it would be more useful to switch off notebook mode, if you're on a long flight, for example, but if you couldn't watch any movie then or listen some music, that would be a bummer.

but thanks for your help

you'll be able to use the asus transformer with either Windows Store (Metro) apps or desktop apps, regardless of whether it's docked or separated as a tablet.

that is a powerful machine! Core i7! 13.3" IPS 1080P screen! I'm jealous! :p
from what I read, there are 2 battery packs with this machine? one in the tablet body and one in the clamshell. also, there's an SSD in the tablet body as well as a hard drive (HDD) in the clamshell. The big difference is when you separate the tablet from the notebook shell, you will not have access to the HDD as well as the battery that's in the docking unit.

otherwise, the functionality is the same whether it's docked or undocked.
