Which tablet should I get?

I'm looking to buy a clovertrail based tablet. I have the following 3 options in my grasp. Which one do you think is the best?

1. Asus Vivo Tab Smart (47.5k JPY)
2. Acer Iconia W510 (52k JPY)
3. DELL Latitude 10 Essentials (50k JPY)

All are 64GB model and comes with no physical keyboard. The DELL will come with an inner case. (a special deal)

The DELL is a bit heavier (580g vs 650g I think), perhaps because it comes with a removable battery. (AFAIK) Will that extra 70g be a deal breaker? I would definitely have gone with the DELL if the extra weight wouldn't be a problem. It weighs almost as much as the iPad.

I hear that the DELL runs significantly cooler than Acer W510 after using for a while. Perhaps there is more material in it to insulate the back more than the other two? Maybe that's why it is heavier.

Only DELL can be bought with English version of Windows 8 installed but I hear that you can change the language of the non-pro version of Windows 8 as well so this shouldn't be a problem?

What do you think guys?

between those, I'd lean either the Asus or the Dell.

the weight difference isn't much. I think weight is an overblown issue. If you can get to a store that has some models, you'll realize that even the "heavy" machines of today are only heavy in comparison to the lightest models out there. that's really the best way to figure out if it's too heavy for you.

if the Dell has a removable battery, that's a major selling point. anyone that's owned a laptop know that batteries are finicky and unreliable. so if you can easily swap, that's a great situation. a removable battery also means that you can have a pair and when one runs out, just swap it for the other. great for when you can't get near an outlet.

Just found out that the Latitude Essentials does not come with removable battery. Only the regular model does. And it is a about $60 more expensive.

a removable battery is always a wonderful thing. I'd put a tremendous amount of value in being able to replace the battery on my own easily.

For that price point the Asus Vivo Tab Smart is the way to go. No removable batter or digitizer on the "essential" L10 but none of them have that for your price range. The Dell L10 with battery and digitizer is $150 more.

The Acer w510 I have heard only gets warm in a certain place so it won't be a bother. But it has a 1080p camera and a dock that totals up to 14 hours of battery life. The Asus vivotab is more of a light design wich is the cheapest windows 8 tablet on the market. It does infact have no keyboard but I have heard good reviews as it is god for its price. It has a cool transleve though. And it comes in many colors. The Dell laptop is good though. Removable mattery and more accesories. But its said is a buisness laptop so thats why its so weighty.

I'm looking at the Acer W510 which does not come with a keyboard dock. The model that comes with the keyboard dock is the W510D. It's about $160 more expensive than the W510, and $220 more expansive than the Asus. The DELL Latitude Essentials model doesn't come with the removal battery unfortunately. Still, the DELL is the best choice IMO because of better warranty (I'm getting this straight from DELL), free inner case, English version of the OS...given that the extra weight won't be a problem. Will I notice the difference of an extra 70g? I know it differs from person to person...but there isn't any way to check prior to getting one. :(

really, all of these machines are good in their own way. there's not much difference anyway. it seems you want the Dell and if you're leaning that way, you wouldn't be making a big mistake if you picked any of these machines.

is there a reason the Asus is not among your updated list?

The ASUS is sold by a third party. Claiming warranty support, especially in the case of a usability issue such as lackluster touch responsiveness (I've seen on Dell's twitter feed that they replaced the tablet in such an situation.) , it would be either impossible or be a pain in the butt. Not to mention that I will have to talk in Japanese because these people don't understand any English. Chances are that Dell will have English speaking customer support agents.

The other thing is that I can choose to get the English version of the OS only with the Dell. No such option with the ASUS or Acer. Even though I think you can change the language to English, having English natively might come in handy when I give it away to a cousin or someone in a couple of years. (I doubt these will have any resale value in a couple of years.)

On top of it, I get a $30 worth inner case for free. If I buy one for the ASUS, it will become more expensive than the Dell.

My only question is, will all those 3 pros with the Dell be negated by the extra weight?

no one can know except you whether that weight negates the Dell's benefits to you. there's no way you can get your hands on one?

Just so that you know, I ordered the DELL. It's taking 10 days to ship to Japan all because I asked for the English version of the OS. Shame! 5 more days until the ETA.

good deal! please leave your impressions. I haven't had a chance to play with any recent Dell machines. Well, I take that back. I did play for a couple minutes on the one with the rotating display. That was kind of neat. Would've spent more time if I didn't see it until I was about to leave.

If you are willing to spend a little more, the Acer Iconia W700 seems to be the best available Windows 8 Tablet. It's the fastest and longest lasting. Newer ones come with a case that holds the keyboard. Amazon has the cheapest one close to $700 USD.

instead of that wall of tiles, you should break up your tiles into groups and name your groups as well. I have my core group of tiles and then I break it down into categories like multimedia, utilities, news, etc.

also, Immersive (aka Metro/Modern) IE10 is great for touch. but if you're interested, the experimental Nightly build of Firefox also works with the Modern interface and will have touch features in the near future. Much better job than what Chrome is currently doing (which is pretty much nothing for Windows 8 with absolutely zero touch features).

True. I'm gonna properly organize everything eventually. The two things that I use the tablet for are mainly browsing the Internet and streaming movies and other video files from the PC.

I tries Firefox nightly and felt it wasn't that great. Can you install extensions on it? I want Lastpass and Adblock Plus in there.

Which file browser are you using? Is there a good metro style file browser than can also easily connect to the network?

Also, is there a way to lower the delay of tap and hold (for context menu)? The default delay is kinda too long for me.

Which messenger app do you use? I use Digsby on the desktop because it is very simple and allows me to link all my account. I tried the metro version of IM+ but its not simple enough. I also get disconnected from it when the tablet goes into sleep.

Another thing. Is there a way to increase the speed of animation or even remove it completely? I don't like animations. I have completely disabled them on the desktop environment.

Which player do you use to play video? I cannot play FLV and MKV with the stock Metro video player. Sucks! I currently use WMP for those. :( MPC-HC has terrible touch support. I'm waiting for the Metro version of VLC. That should fix the video player problem.

yes, right now, Firefox Nightly is limited. you can install plugins but some of them don't work with the Nightly build without some tinkering.

file browser? it depends on what app you're using.

for Modern apps, for the context menu, you swipe from either the bottom of the screen or the top of the screen. for desktop apps, yeah, it's a long hold.

yes, I use IM+. I set a long period before it goes to sleep so it hasn't been a problem for me.

I still use the desktop apps mostly for video playback, especially MPC-HC, beause of MKV. yes, the desktop apps are pretty poor for touch. I do like Metro Video Player (the third-party app in the Windows Store, not from Microsoft). It works great but no MKV support. can't wait for Modern VLC. That'll solve a lot of problems. MP4 is a great container for h.264 but it's not as flexible as MKV.

Other than that, I mostly watch video through the Netflix app.

as for animations, I remember reading some people disabling them. but I don't know how personally (since it didn't interest me).

The context menu I was talking about was the one that pops up when you press and hold selected text, to copy them to clipboard. Paste also shows up whenever you can paste stuff.

About IM+. You mean you set a long period before the tablet enters standby? Or some other setting?

I like the stock video player too. Just need a touch friendly time slider. I cannot remember what, but I ran into some problems when running MPC-HC. I'll check it out when I get back home from work. (What am I doing not taking the tablet to work??!!! Hehe. Will get there soon.)

I wish there was Netflix in Japan. Only Hulu is available but Hulu doesn't have enough or recent content. :(
