Unable to install a backup HD from a old WinXP computer

I have a hard drive I used as a backup on my old Win XP computer. I tried to install it on my new Win 8 64 bit computer. At first the new computer booted but no second drive visible. I then rebooted to find the BIOS and the machine came up with "Computer needs Repair". I removed the second drive and the newer computer is running OK.
I am now reading that Win 8 has a newer ReFS file system. Is this the problem or what am I missing?

I removed the older drive because the computer would not get past "The Computer Needs Repair" error. The computer did boot OK the first time that drive was in but not after that. So I am looking for information on what I should expect. Another problem I am having with this new computer is my external IOmega NAS drive won't re-connect when I reboot unless I go through it's reset procedure. IOmega said it is having problems with some Win 8 computers too. So I am wondering if trying to add an older NTFS to my computer is related to the IOmega problem.
