Hello,
I just bought a 1.5 TB portable Toshiba harddrive for $109 CA from Bestbuy.
And when I went to plug it in, to my surprise it is only 1.36TB! My question is what happened to the other 140GB? I mean I got an older computer that has a 150GB hard drive, with that I was able to load Adobe CS3 Master Collection, Office 2007, Windows XP. Along with music, photos etc..
Anyways, am I missing something here? Why would they advertise 1.5TB and only give me 1.36TB when I plug it in?

Oh okay that makes a lot of sense now. I see what they mean by it. But would that not constitute false advertising then? I mean if 1,500,299,390,967 bytes is actually 1.36TB and they write on the box 1.5 TB then that is false advertising??!? They should write 1.36 TB on the box then?

Glad we could help.

I would say that it's certainly misleading when they are not advertised with the real size instead.

This is certainly confusing but not misleading.
In computer world 1TB = 1024GB not 1000GB
What you saw 1.36TB is the amount of available space to store data but don't forget that Windows does reserved about 10% of the disk capacity for Master File Table (MFT) and does not show anywhere and that's what confusing.
So take everything into account, it is in fact 1.5TB capacity

Hello topgundcp,

I understand all that, but for the average person that doesn't, this will be misleading to them since it's not what they will actually have available. The hard drive manufacturers should have the "real" actual size on the label instead to avoid this.
