Hello all,

I just did a clean install of Win 8 Pro x64 and I was surprised to find that the installation had defaulted to running with (or using) only 1 of my 2 logical CPU cores. The fix was to use msconfig to activate the 2nd core as shown in the image below:

After the above, Win 8 started to use both logical processors as shown below:

Cheers!

Hi Norepli,
FYI. By default, Windows will use all cores. You don't need to set anything. If you look at the screen shot below, Number of Processors is unchecked. The only time you use this is for trouble shooting.

Hi topgundcp,

Maybe I didn't explain my situation well enough so i'll try again.

After installing Windows 8 Pro, by default, I was only running on a single core. My initial task manager cpu view only had 1 cpu listed (where your view has 2). Now, I couldn't show the "before" fix pictures because I was more concerned with fixing the problem. So, I only showed the "after" fix pictures. Also, that box I checked is for specifically identifying how many cores you want to use on boot so I guess that triggered the new OS to start using both logical processors (after boot).

That's strange. Double check your BIOS to see if you have all cores enabled. As you can see in my screenshot, I did not have to set it with all my PC's

Hi,

I never changed anything in the BIOS. Hyper-threading (eg, use 2 logical cores) was always enabled throughout the entire installation. I totally agree that this should never have happened. Thanks for your feedback and suggestions.
