Solved Improper Action of Arrow Keys on Laptop

I have Office 2010 installed on four machines:

HP 1414 With Windows 7
HP Pavilion Laptop with Windows 7
ASUS Q200e Laptop with Windows 7
ASUS Q2003 Laptop with Windows 8

Here is the problem

Excel has, for years, used the Ctrl/Home and Ctrol/End to move the cell selection to the uppermost left corner of the sheet and lowermost right hand corner respectively. On either of the two ASUSes it does not do that. The ASUS does not have a separate Home and End keys. The Up, Down, Left and Right keys have PgUp, PgDown, Home and
End written on them. Pressing any of the arrow keys moves the cell selection as expected on cell at a time in the correct direction. However, Using Ctrl/Home moves the selection to the far left of same row of the sheet not the uppermost left cell. Pressing Ctrl/End moves it to the far right.

Ctrl/PgUp or Crtrl/Pgdn moves it 3 row up or down and not to the preceding or next sheet.

This is aggravating to say the least.

ASUS has been no help yet.

Anyone here able to help me out.

Thank you very much.

So (outside of Excel) how does the keyboard know which of the two labels on each key you want? Is it the Ctrl key doing it?

I'd try it with Shift, Alt, numlock etc. etc. to see if any other combinations work.

There's an old-school Excel (or is it an even older Lotus 1-2-3??!) keyboard shortcut which might help for part of it.

Press the {End} key then the {Home} key is, I think, the same as {Ctrl}+{End} (at the same time).

In the same way, {End} then {AnyArrow} is the same as {Ctrl}+{AnyArrow}.

Thanks DavidY

You got me to look at the behavior of the arrow keys outside of Excel and Office 2010. Sure enough they don't behave as they should when combined with fn or Ctrl. For instance in Quicken the ctrl/home key doesn't take me to the first entry in the file and so forth. In

I will explore this further.

Thanks again.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. No combination of function, control, alt, shift + the arrow keys has worked so far and working in excel is much more tedious now. Has anyone found a solution? Thanks.

My very, very bad! I found the solution a long time ago and thought I had posted it but, as usual, I was wrong.

On my ASUS pressing the fn+Ctrl+Home(left arrow) makes it behave as if there were separate Home or End keys.

I am very sorry for my slip up.

FYI... thanks soooooooo much for this posting... I was having the same problem and find that using (Fn) + Ctrl + Home/End work like I'm used to without the (Fn) key. It IS really frustrating to have something you are used to suddenly not behave as expected. Happy November!
