    Disk Reporting Full

My C Drive is 500GB. It reported full (it should not be) so I removed 36GB to an external drive about 3-4 weeks ago, mainly photograph files. Now, without adding any software, it telling me its full again. Any ideas why it should be doing this?

This morning I released another 1.6GB of space, and now its just reported 0-gb space?

1 hour later and it now tells me I only have 40mb of free space???

Just cleared 'old windows' and now I have 1,63GB free - I think!!!

There's a little program I like to use (actually two) that give the user a great representation of how their hard drive is being used.

The first is called WinDirStat: WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics
The second: Disk Space Fan: Disk Space Fan 4 - Fast disk space analyzer and duplicate file remover

Both will illustrate where your usage is coming from.

DSF tells me I have only 702 mb left - vastly different from a few mins ago (1,63GB).

Also capacity 458gb; deleting duplicates right now - then I can run the other and compare

Just a crazy thought: do you have file history enabled, and is it pointed at your C: drive as the destination for keeping the history files?

mbratch, unknown. Cleaned dup files now showing 12.3GB free

D: Factory image is taking up 8GB. I should del that partition, its not use to me now. I have my own disks of 7 and 8

This is getting stupid now. 12.3GB free, then rebooted pc; now it says I have 10.4GB Free !! AAAGGGHHH

I wouldn't delete the factory image just yet, since it won't really solve your problem (up to you of course ).

I think JLyman has the right idea: you want to figure out what subfolder(s) is/are filling up. So you were at 12.3GB free, then at 10.4GB free after a reboot. Did it only happen after the reboot, or was the reboot just circumstantial? If your PC just sits there, does it fill up? At what rate? Does it take all day or minutes? A strange issue indeed. If you want to check on my crazy thought, search for "file history" in Windows search and see if it's turned on and where it's storing the history. I really think it probably guards against a bad setup, but if it were doing history on your user folder, and the target history location was also the user folder, that would be a disk-filling loop it seems to me. Quite unlikely, but something to check.

Knowing what folder is getting stuff dumped into it could be a big help in tracking down the problem, though. I would think it's either a temp folder or something in your user area. But I'm speculating.

I deleted the D drive contents, as they are old win 7 factory setting, but not yet deleted partition, it was only to gain another 8gb. I checked file history, its off.

So what does your drive map look like (per the suggestion I made)? Screenshots are pretty.
