JLyman - screen shot as requested, and my thanks for your time. This is via windirstat. Whilst prepping the pc, noticed a file that should have been deleted months ago, an Nvidia folder, so deleted that and gained 2.8GB as I now use an AMD card.

Do you Kaspersky? If so, disable tracing. The fatty block on the right side is the .enc1 log files Kaspersky creates when Tracing is enabled and they can get STUPIDLY out of hand.

Yes, well spotted. I am on Kaspersky 2013. Will disable that. I am at work now so will have to do it tomorrow. I came to a decision today and acted. Its about time I went up a gear so ordered a 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA drive and will do a completely fresh install next week. I have KIS 2013 on this laptop too and do not have this problem. Can I delete ENC?

edit: where do I find this 'trace' to disable it? Tried all settings couldn't find.

All your answers should be located here: How to generate a traces file using GUI in Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 6.0 MP4

It's an older article but I think it should be much the same as it is only used for support purposes.

    Thanks!

Also have a look at your shadowstorage. The command is:

    vssadmin list shadowstorage
