Same problem here plus backup fail message

Has been showing up for weeks but don't know how to fix the problem. Also shows that backup has failed for certain files because error on C: drive. Of course it's all the files under my User folder, e.g. Documents, Pictures, etc.

Thought a clean install might fix it but I download the Upgrade Assistant and it say online install of WIndows 8 isn't available for my country even though that's how I installed it in the first place.

There are substantial changes in the way CHKDSK works in Windows 8, you can search for these for more info (sorry I just have file names, no URLs handy):

CheckDiskImprovementsforWin8 video

Redesigning chkdsk and the new NTFS health model - Building Windows 8 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs.pdf

Virtualizing storage for scale, resiliency, and efficiency - Building Windows 8 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs.pdf

NealChristiansen_Win8FileSystemPerformance.pdf

From what little I know, maybe the so-called 'Spot Verifier' service may not be running? It should be spot-checking disk errors.

Look in your event viewer for NTFS errors (I assume you are using NTFS?).

Again, from what little I know, the new changes should fix disk errors on-line, or take the drive off-line for more thorough checks. But at any rate, it should not be going on and on unless your hard drive is going bad.

Let us know what happens, this is all new to us.

Thanks for the replies. There are two messages consistently appearing in the event viewer that relate to NTFS:
************
A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume C:.

A corruption was found in a file system index structure. The file reference number is 0x12000000002206. The name of the file is "\Users\Debra\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox". The corrupted index attribute is ":$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION".
****************

Volume C: (\Device\HarddiskVolume2) needs to be taken offline for a short time to perform a Spot Fix. Please run "CHKDSK /SPOTFIX" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME <drive:>" locally or remotely via PowerShell.
**************

I tried running CHKDSK /SPOTFIX but am not sure that I am doing it correctly. All I am sure of is that Restarting the machine does not eliminate the message re: drive errors. Perhaps it is the hard drive that is starting to fail as this notebook is approaching 7 years, which in my experience is about double what I would expect. I did try checking the Toshiba website as recommended but the diagnostics file I downloaded may not work with Windows 8 as it wouldn't let me select the drive to be tested.

So I guess you need to run

chkdsk /spotfix c:

Probably you need to run as administrator.

There are other chkdsk options that may help, too - the new offline scan and fix looks appropriate here.

Thanks arachnaut. I found a YouTube video that was helpful in figuring out how to run chkdsk /scan and chdkdsk /spotfix. Most files were repaired but I still have 3 that show as being repaired online though they continue to show up as errors in the scan. And there are 3 that say they need an offline repair but a restart doesn't fix them and I can't delete them...guess I just live with that unless I reformat the drive and start clean. Maybe it's time to research a new machine so might not be all bad. :) Thanks again.

There is one more thing you can try. I'm not sure of the consequences for Windows 8 but I have used this for Windows 7.

In an elevated (administrator) command prompt type:

fsutil dirty set c:

This marks the volume as 'dirty' and a full chkdsk will be done on the next restart. 'Dirty' means that the OS is to treat the drive as suspect - that there could be bad file indices and so on. It would normally only occur if a power fail occurred during file writes.

It may take a while to run, but should not cause any damage.

Naturally look into this a bit more and see if you want to try it.

There are other things you can try to look for bad blocks and remap them, etc. That may be the problem with the non-reparable files. "chkdsk /r /b c:" does that.

But, in general, it looks like your hard drive may be degenerating and it might be better to get a new drive.

I would certainly make a back up of all your important information (email and documents, pictures, etc.) before you go much further.

Thought a clean install might fix it but I download the Upgrade Assistant and it say online install of WIndows 8 isn't available for my country even though that's how I installed it in the first place.

I think you will find if you run the Upgrade Assistant on a PC with Win 8 already installed, the 'Not Available in your Country' message appears UNLESS you run the Assistant in Compatibility mode using the 'XP Service Pack 3' option.
This worked for me and others.

This time the country message didn't show so it went through all the stuff that showed up on the first installation but at the very end I had a message that it couldn't install Windows 8 and everything was set back to where it was originally. However, the hard drive error flag is gone and chkdsk comes up clean. Backups appear to be working fine now (I've been backing up to 2 external drives because I am expecting that one of these days this drive will fail).

I appreciate the advice and will keep watch for future problems.

I'm not going to be much help. To be honest, I don't know enough about all this to recommend anything. I just went through the things that arachnaut listed and when none of that removed the flag I tried to reinstall Windows 8. As noted, that wasn't successful but the flag was gone. However, I now cannot open the Event Viewer. Not sure what other problems there might be but I'm guessing that my 7 year old hard drive is failing. Perhaps others can offer helpful advice. Thanks!

Reviving an old thread -

I keep getting this error too. The problem is it's checking my Drobo (RAID device) for errors. I dont want it to check my Drobo. Is there any known way to have it check only the "C" drive (omit the "D" drive)? My C drive is a SSD.

I just got the same error for the first time on Windows 8.1, and I noticed reading the previous comments, that dual booting might be one of the culprits.

I have Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 installed on 3 entirely separate drives (entirely, so only the respective drives were plugged in during install, so they would have their own boot records).

Is this separation interfering with Windows somehow? I really hope Windows doesn't mess up the boot records while trying to "fix" these "errors".

Some of the hardware might seem odd (PSU, SSD), but I'm not wasting money on replacing perfectly functional hardware only because a newer version is out. Nor am I willing to pay extortion money for replacements or intended upgrades (GPU, RAM), especially if that "upgrade" has a hardware design flaw (CPU).
This is probably not related, but I see this when I boot from a USB flash drive that has a Linux Live CD ISO.

For example, I install the Linux Mint 17 Live CD to a flash drive and start from that device.

The Live CD runs and, unlike a real CD which is Read-Only, Linux seems to write something to this Flash Drive.

When you quit Linux, it doesn't seem to flush the I/O buffers or something, so you get a corruption of the Flash Drive.

Fortunately, there's no real damage and the repair finds no problems - but it is a nuisance.
