Hardware dilemma

I have two optical drives that worked fine under XP. One is a DVD-RW and the other is a CD-RW. Both show up on the control panel, both show up as drives, but no matter what disc I put in, the drives rev up and then I get a window popping up that says "Please put a disc in the drive"

I also have a SATA HDD that registers in the device manager, but does not show up as a drive on the HDD page under computer

Try adding the devices in Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Also, you could use device manager to try to update drivers for the devices. But, also, you may need to do some firmware updates.

The driver updates have been checked, and I am up to date on those. I will check and see about firmware. Thank you

What type of mobo do you have? Does the mobo have specific sata ports...sata 3 and sata 6. Is there a limit to the amount of sata ports you can connect. As in my case, my mobo has 6 sata ports but I can only have 4 hooked up at one time in legacy mode IDE/SATA. To use the other 2 port I have to have a special driver to enable and use them.

I only have 2 sata ports, and the two HDD are hooked up to them. I did notice something odd, though. After I went through and updated all the firmwares that I could, I noticed that my F: drive (which is my main one, don't ask why, wondows decreed that it would be so) is suddenly twice as big as it should be. I had 2 250 GB sata HDD in there, now I have one 500 GB drive listed(as listed by the computer screen). Is this some sort of "feature" that I didn't know about?

Definitely not a feature. Sounds like a quirk to me.

I still see two drives on the control panel device manager. Odd. My optical drives are still spotty, though. I think I may go dig up a cleaning disc and see if it's just dusty in there
