Will this processor work with my motherboard

    Hey Guys

I am currently working on upgrading my computer and have been doing a bit of research on motherboards and processors

I have learned that motherboards can only support some processors even if unsupported ones have the same socket

So I have found a new processor that might be compatible with my motherboard but I want you lot to tell me if you think It will work or not

Here's the specs that you may need to know

My motherboard: (PTGD1-LA (Puffer) Motherboard Specifications, PTGD1-LA (Puffer) HP Pavilion t775.uk Desktop PC | HP® Support

    My Current Processor: (Intel Pentium 4 530) ARK | Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 530/530J supporting HT Technology (1M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

The New Processor: (Intel Pentium 4 662)
    ARK | Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 662 supporting HT Technology (2M Cache, 3.60 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

The current processor I use is 32 bit as the new processor is 64 bit. Will this still work on the motherboard

I don't believe that CPU will work, but let me do some checking for you...

This site says 3.4Ghz max... The fact that it's an ASUS board helps as I'm searching for the ASUS model now...

ASUS PTGD1-LA Socket 775 ATX MB w/P4 3.4GHz, Vid, Snd

I'll do more searching... It's got an i915P chipset and that may limit your CPU choices...

Lots of different opinions on this out there, but you're dealing with an ASUS board that HP used, so HP would have had to provide a BIOS that would allow that CPU to be used. I do not believe the 64bit option is available and I would doubt that the CPU would work in that board, but if it's cheap enough, you could try it. I would not put much $ at all into the "upgrade" as it may not recognize the CPU and then you'll be stuck. Put in an SSD, fast video card and enjoy it as is, if the upgrade doesn't work out. Good luck!

Awesome. Please keep us posted. If you want my personal, i don't think it will work unless the motherboard has PAE and can support 64bit which you could check by using crucial.com to check the motherboard specs using their online checker tool.

I see you're using the HP Pavilion. I want full details as I'm in the same boat hehe. I hope you get away and get that upgrade to work!

According to Intel, the new CPU is supported by the 915P chipset.

    ARK | Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 662 supporting HT Technology (2M Cache, 3.60 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

However, I think that the only place you'll be able to get BIOS upgrade will be from HP. Maybe this one will work:

    PTGD-LA/PTGD1-LA/PTGD2-LA Motherboard BIOS Update | HP® Support

    (It's newer than the P4 662.)

Looking at my motherboard. HP seem to think it can support Pentium 4 processors up to 3.6 GHz however ASUS who made the motherboard seem to think it's only 3.4GHz. Taking this into consideration I could use the Pentium 4 650 instead of the 662 as the 650 is 3.4GHz and is still 64 bit and it seems my chipset will also support the Pentium 4 650
