Will this processor work with my motherboard

  1. #11

This type of upgrade is always risky, but as long as you're willing to risk it (buying a CPU that may not work in your motherboard), it's worth it. The BIOS and chipset are critically important, especially when changing CPU's. Good luck and let us kow how it goes!

    Windows 8.1 Core X64

So I had not updated this in some time so here's an update. I bought a 64 bit Intel Pentium 4 640 for my computer to replace the Pentium 4 530 and it seems to be working meaning the computer can be upgraded to 64 bit. I have also replaced the GPU from an ATI Radon X550 to a ATI radeon HD 5450. I have also upgraded the computer to 3GB of ram which will be upgraded to 4GB as soon as I have bought another module and installed 64 bit Windows 8

    Update complete

Excellent news! Thanks for the update. I'm really glad the new CPU worked for you. Sometimes as much as we research, the test is really when you install the CPU and see if the PC boots up. You did a great job on this one and you'll get a little more life out of it. I'm building a new PC this weekend and I'm documenting the entire process here so you can follow along if you're so inclined. Again, congrats!! Now, put an SSD in that old PC and see it move!!

I have the PTGD1-LA motherboard as well, and it came with a Pentium 4 540J. Like the OP I was also looking to upgrade, so I went ahead and bought a Pentium 4 661 on ebay, which is built with 65nm transistors. That was a bad move. I can confirm that this motherboard does NOT support the P4 661, even with the latest BIOS update. The new CPU works fine in another motherboard I have, so it's not a faulty CPU.

I may try buying a P4 660 or 662 in the future to see if that will work - I'll report back if I do. Or I'll just go with the proven 640. Undecided...

It's always risky trying to upgrade CPU's on older motherboards, but if the CPU is inexpensive and can be used elsewhere, the risk may be worth it.

Hardly seems like an upgrade. What are you hoping to achieve?

    64-bit.

I ended up playing it safe and bought a Pentium 4 650 on ebay dirt cheap. The CPU is missing one of the bypass capacitors, but it still works. I'm currently installing a 64-bit OS. Success!

    Hello Rob,

I have the same computer (HP Pavilion t775.uk) but HP don't seem to support it any more. I was think of getting an SSD but the BIOS doesn't seem to support AHCI. Did you ever get around to installing an SSD and was it ok with just IDE? Don't suppose you've got a BIOS update lying around?

    Thanks

SSD's work fine in IDE mode if AHCI is not an option...

IDE? That's like ancient! All the SSD's I've seen or seen advertised are all SATA III, ages away from IDE. Four generations actually.
    And with totally different interfaces.

SSD's, at least some, may also be backward compatible with SATA I (1) but IDE?.....no freakin' way!

Got an IDE only motherboard? Dump it, and upgrade to a SATA III motherboard, with new CPU and DDR3 ram.

    And, that's the SHORT answer!
