On a touchscreen device, is there a way to auto lauch the Windows 8 keyboard in a non-metro application when you tap on a text box? I'm extremey surprised this functionality does not already exixt by default.

I'm not sure you can. but what you can do is you right-click on the taskbar and go to toolbars and then enable the Touch Keyboard. then when you bring up your desktop app, just tap the touch keyboard icon.

yeah, it's not the best setup but it could be worse.

I think that's been left up to the device manufacturers, as my Gigabyte tablet has a soft key on the bezel that enables the touch keypad to show up when needed. It can be enabled/disabled through the tablet software. Mind you, when I start up Windows, the login keyboard comes up automatically.

I understand. It is sad, though. There are at least a couple of 3rd party manuf that have virtual keyboards you can install in Windows that support this function. Since Windows 8 is supposed to be geared towards tablets, you would think this would have been built in. It is kinda a pain to keep tapping on the keyboard icon when I want to type.

I also wish that the keyboard would pop up automatically when clicking in a field. It does this in the modern UI applications, including IE10, but not in the desktop applications. I have gotten used to this happening in Android and IOS. It should be a setting.

yeah, they should find some kind of workaround. i just think the issue is these desktop programs were created before the idea of a virtual keyboard or its programmers never imagined putting in the support.

whereas with the Modern UI (aka Windows Store aka Metro) apps, there are guidelines about including support for all these different interfaces. there's lots of documents and support tools for easily adding support for all of them. the programmer just needs to recognize that people want the feature for them to add it.

I agree but Microsoft controls the OS. I have apps that work in desktop mode, such as WCS Browser, that supports launching the default virtual keyboard automatically when you tap in the address field.

Not to mention OTHER virtual keyboards that can be downloaded and installed and set to work that way in the desktop mode.

If all these people can figure it out..I think Microsoft could as well.
