    Intel Processors sockets

Hey guys so i'm looking at processors for an old computer

The processor is an Intel Pentium 4 530

The socket on it is PLGA 775 according to the Intel website and also supports PPGA 478

I'm looking to buy a processor to replace it but I don't understand fully how the sockets work

My main question is if I bought a processor with the socket LGA 775 would it be compatible with PLGA 775 socket on the motherboard

I'm looking at a powerful but cheap processor for the socket which it's an Intel Core Duo and would like to buy it to replace the Pentium 4 but want to make sure it's compatible

    Thanks

I would make sure you know EXACTLY what motherboard you have (incl. Rev version) and go to the mfg's website and see what CPU's they say are compatible, it's more then socket compatibility. Some boards will only handle CPU's up to a certain speed or wattage, so you have to be careful. The motherboard determines the CPU and RAM, so use the motherboard docs as your "bible" and you should be OK.

Cheers I never knew that the motherboard will only support certain CPUs even if the socket is the same

My buddy has a FoxConn motherboard that will only support low voltage 775 socket CPU's and those are hard to find and very expensive. He was ready to buy a different CPU to "upgrade" and I stopped him before he wasted his $. Always use the motherboard as your "map" as it determines the CPU, RAM, video, etc...There can be many revisions of the same motherboard, so check the stencil on the board and be sure you correctly ID it. Good luck!
