Is touch the future?

Many people have taken as a given that, with the introduction of Windows 8, touch is now the future; however, the reality is that PC makers and others see this as merely a part of ongoing development:

[Products that could make it common to control a computer, TV, or something else using eye gaze, gesture, voice, and even facial expression were launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. The technology promises to make computers and other devices easier to use, let devices do new things, and perhaps boost the prospects of companies reliant on PC sales. Industry figures suggest that interest in laptop and desktop computers is waning as consumers’ heads are turned by smartphones and tablets.

PC Makers Bet on Gaze, Gesture, Voice, and Touch | MIT Technology Review

The interesting thing is that many of the designers are working on making these features retrospective, so that they can be used with any device (within reason); hey effectively become like another peripheral device such as a mouse and keyboard. We just need a computer/brain mind-meld and problem solved.

I have pre-ordered the Leap 3D Motion

https://leapmotion.com/

This gives you gestures, without having to touch anything.

I can see all of these things having individual benefits for selective applications, but there's not a lot of information available to show how it fully works, other than images of hands raised in front of a screen. That would become very tedious in short order.

Just did and it confirmed what I thought; very sore arms in short order. I wonder if it could read toe movements as you sat back with your feet on the desk? You could then sit back in the office with your hands behind your head and genuinely claim that you're working.

As has been pointed out many times, "Gorilla Arm" just doesn't happen in real-life usage. People that repeat this myth don't seem to understand how people actually use this.

Pointing is a natural action for people. You do it thousands of times a day without even realizing it. Your hand isn't going to be waving in the air constantly. That's just not how it works.

"Intel's CES booth -- still a large presence in the CES Central Hall -- had one basic unmistakable message: touch has arrived.Windows 8 convertibles, detachables, touch-screen laptops, and just plain tablets from Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Samsung, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony, and others blanketed Intel's booth.
And just to make sure the touch message was crystal clear, Intel issued an edict to PC partners during its CES keynote: all next-generation ultrabooks based on its "Haswell" chip must be touch.
What does that mean to consumers? Your next laptop will likely be touch, whether you like it or not."

Just like the sore arms on touch computers, hahahahah.

According to the video, it requires a lot more than just pointing and you clearly have to have your hands above the device for it to read your gestures. If all you're after is a pointer, then I'd have thought that a mouse would be sufficient.

Let us know how the physio goes after you've been using the device for a while.

Im pretty sure you could quite easily do it with your toes Ray.

Once again Bill, you've completely missed the point of the post and immediately taken it to mean I'm attacking Windows 8. You've really become obsessed with anything that I post. I notice that you don't even comment on negative posts made by others.

I don't know Ray, I think you've got a complex, I never mentioned Windows 8, you asked about touch and I posted an article about touch.

Okay now I'll give you my opinion based on what Intel had to say. I believe touch is going to be very pervasive for the near future, there will also be voice commands, I use these occasionally, but I'm not real comfortable talking to a computer or a phone.

I also think there will be gestures and eye movements, but for the very near future touch is the way to go.

Bill, I think you need to slow down a tad, you don't even know what you're posting anymore:

You didn't notice the quotes Ray, that was just an article about touch, I had nothing to do with it, that was Intel

That was probably my fault I should use the forums tools to make it plainer to see what has been cut and pasted.

You still brought in a reference to Windows 8. You can twist it any way you want, but consciously or subconsciously, that's what was driving your post. I really am in your head and it reminds me of this:

Now you're starting to worry me Ray, just take it easy buddy, I've already made a couple of other comments this morning, believe me I'm not following you around.

Anyway, you told me you wanted to discuss stuff, so I'm discussing, what do you think about what Intel had to say.

touch is just another option. more options is a good thing.

that's why I use a trackball instead of a mouse. that's why I use a touchscreen. more choices mean more people have different ways that fit their needs.

You're not the bad guy Ray, there are plenty of those on here, and with some of those I don't bother to comment, it's like talking to a brick wall. At least I think you basically believe in Windows 8, there are just a few things annoying you and that's fine, that's as it should be.
