    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

I strongly suspect a hard drive problem due to the 49 errors on 09 January

The hpdskflt.sys is from HP, but it's a "cranky" driver IME (In My Experience). Be sure to set a System Restore point before trying it, and be sure to uninstall the older version before installing the newer version.

Also, try the system without the hpdskflt.sys driver - I haven't had anyone try that yet, but it's possible that it's not required and may help the system (although it'll leave you without "drop" protection).

If you can't find a Win8 version, scan the HP website for newer systems that have the same protection. Then see if their Win8 drivers will install on your system. Finally, if you can't find any Win8 versions, try running the installer in Compatibility mode for Win7 - that may help get it installed.

Then test to see if any of this has helped with the Synaptics problem.

    Good luck!

Ok, I found this, but there's no info that it contains hpdskflt.sys but it's the most relevant thing HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

That's the version made for my notebook, now I also found the same thing in a Windows 8 version HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection | HP® Support but I don't know if it's still the same thing because they also call it HP 3D Driveguard in brackets in the description.

Should I try the Windows 8 version? They don't say for which models it is, so I guess it's generic or something.

If it were me, I'd first make a System Restore point (and maybe a disk image) in case of problems.

Then I'd remove the program and see if the system still BSOD's

If it doesn't, then I'd try the Windows 8 version that you listed last ( HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection | HP® Support ). The hpdskflt.sys driver in that package is dated from 23 Aug 2012 (I used Universal Extractor (free) to extract the files from the HP download).

    Good luck!

But I DON'T get BSODs. I did get them before because of Avast, but that was maybe two weeks before, I don't get any BSODs now. My only problem is that the Synaptics driver keeps failing.
And what should I uninstall? I don't have ANY HP software installed.

Sorry, I'm a BSOD analyst, so I see them everywhere! :0)

    Revised version:
If it were me, I'd first make a System Restore point (and maybe a disk image) in case of problems.

Then I'd remove the program and see if the system will allow you to install the Synaptics Touchpad drivers (and have them remain installed)

    Good luck!

Wait a sec...couldn't the disk errors be from an external drive ( D: ) ? Because I plugged my external HDD in right now and Windows detected some problems with it and it fixed them without restarting.

It's possible that that was the source of the errors.
Run these free hard drive diagnostics on ALL hard drives: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Any that fail - backup IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Wait, so I should backup BEFORE the procedure? I won't have where to backup if I'll plug my hard drive with backups into my PC when running the procedure.

EDIT: I was reading the instructions, and I wasn't absolutely sure which one to download. I have a Hitachi HTS543225L9A300 so is the test for me HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT) here Downloads ?

You should always backup BEFORE a problem occurs. For example, I never backed up my wedding photos - and one day my hard drive died. While I worried about the excruciating ways that my wife would use to kill me - I remembered that I'd forgotten to erase the pictures from the camera! Saved by sheer luck - and I lived to tell the story!

Backing up BEFORE the test is a good idea also - but don't do it because of the test, do it because it needs doing.
I specify it after failing the test because you may not have another opportunity before the drive dies on you - and data recovery after that gets very, very expensive!!!

I suggest this bootable test for Hitachi drives (I don't like running tests from within Windows as it adds another layer of complexity to the software/testing):

Well, since I have most of my important data still on the hardrive from my previous Vista installation I'm gonna skip the backup, mainly because I don't have any space left anywhere for it either. And...what is the chance of the test failing? And what would it do?
