USB 2 Devices not working in USB 3

I bought a lenovo windows 8 laptop, and my friend bought an Asus Windows 8 laptop recently.
I have not been able to get usb 2 devices (flash drive, mouse, smart phone etc etc) to work
in any of the usb 3 ports. They work fine in usb 2 on the laptops.
Is there some setting I need to change to allow USB 2 devices to work in USB 3 ports?

    Thanks

They should automatically work. USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0. I've used 2.0 devices in my USB 3.0 ports without problems.

As they are new PC's and in warranty it would be best to contact the PC vendor's.

But, is the USB 3.0 showing up in the Device Manager?

I have a desktop but your laptops should also list the USB 3.0 Here is what my Device Manager/USB section shows.

I would be shocked if it was a hardware/warranty issue. Two laptops from different companies. I imagine perhaps it is a general issue with some laptops. IF someone with a laptop with usb 3 has an idea that would be great.

I don't have the laptops in front of me so I can't check the device manager right now as you mentioned.

There has to be something you are doing. Maybe the vendor, since you will be on a phone talking to someone, can straighten out the issue. Long distance troubleshooting over a forum can be iffy since we are not there to see what you are doing or what you actually have.

I do PC support and talking to a client is much better and faster to get over the phone problems resolved. The vendor's support personnel can log into your PC and see what is happening.

That's fine I will check with the vendor. It is nothing I am doing other than plugging in my usb 2.0 device into USB 3.0 Slot.
That's it. There is some driver or something that perhaps the vendor did not install. "
    Thanks

Is there a BIOS setting for the USB3 ports that says something like "support legacy USB"? I've only worked on one PC lately with USB3 and it was a GigaByte motherboard. I seem to remember seeing something in the BIOS settings like this.

The "legacy" option in the BIOS is for USB 2.0. If that is not enabled you will not see an entry for "enhanced controller" in the Device Manager/USB listing. My new build is a gigabyte motherboard GA-Z77x-UD5H (UEFI BIOS) and there is nothing in the BIOS to enable or disable USB 3.0

In Device Manager try uninstalling USB 3.0 Ports and let Windows reinstall at reboot or reinstall the latest ones yourself. That may work according to what I found using a Google search on this subject.

Can someone explain to me, how Windows 10 is going to work? Microsoft says it will work on a variety of devices. Also, they said that only "some" would get the upgrade. What about hardware? Also, someone said we would go have to go through some updates to be prepared for Windows 10.
