Old HP Printer issues

So I just got a new computer (HP Pavilion G6, Windows 8) and plugged in my hp 1200 printer to the USB drive. It detected it and began installing, but it was taking a really long time -- I mean a really, really long time -- so something was clearly wrong. I thought I'd try using the install disc (which I wanted to avoid because of all the bloatware and because it's ancient), so I pulled out the USB. Needless to say, the install disc didn't work. And at the point when it asked me to plug in the printer, it couldn't detect it. I tried installing without plugging in the printer, but it still wouldn't detect the printer. Then I uninstalled what I could from the HP disc.

So basically, now my computer won't detect the USB as new hardware -- it bleeps when it's plugged in, but nothing happens and it doesn't show up under Computer.

I know I shouldn't have interrupted the installation, but it seemed so dubious... now in retrospect I'm thinking I should have just let it do its thing. Is there any way to get it to detect the printer again so I can give it another go?

Thanks!

Nevermind, it just randomly showed up in Devices and started working.
