Dynex SATA external HDD really slow 700/kbs

My windows 7 computer crashed and I took out the hard drive and placed it in the enclosure. I connected it to my windows 8 computer and it sees the drive, says it is working properly, but everything moves in slow motion. To download some pics back to my other computer it will take 17 hours. I can see my files, but every folder takes a long time to open up. I also made sure all drivers are updated and I have all the windows updates, etc. Any ideas? I also receive a permission notice a lot and I click continue, but that takes forever to change the ownership file by file as well.

I would Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

Hi there
even a USB 1 device would go faster than that -- something is defective -- not sure what though. Are you sure the power is connected correctly -- you need to connect the POWER part ( the longer part of the connector ) as well as the SATA data part of the disk to the relevant connectors in the computer Mobo.

Some older SATA HDD's have two power connectors -- the standard SATA and the standard 4 pin cable used by the old IDE system. It's also OK to connect the IDE power connector INSTEAD OF the SATA power connector but you need to ensure the SATA data connector is properly attached.

DO NOT CONNECT BOTH THE IDE AND SATA POWER CONNECTORS AT THE SAME TIME -- USE ONE OR THE OTHER.

Other than this - it looks like the disk could be defective -- although this is a much rarer occurrence than most people generally realize. HDD's do fail but not very often and when they go they usually break completely.

Thanks theog and jimbo. I'll try running the diagnostics tomorrow. I have the HDD in an enclosure and there was just one connection. It's the dynex hd-303513 and I double checked the connection to be sure. As for the HDD failing I am getting my files transferred just at a very slow rate, which is why this seems strange.

The hard drive is a western digital green (wd10eads).

This seems strange as you say there's only one one connector -- The disk definitely needs a separate power source - especially if it's originally a "Classical internal HDD" that you've just put into an external enclosure.

Are you sure there isn't a separate power connector or socket on the enclosure somewhere.

Hey, Sorry, it is only one connector that merges both the power and sata ports. After looking more closely it includes both. My computer had two separate plugs. I still need to run the scan of the hard drive from WD's site to see if I can at least salvage the drive as a backup device, but at least I got most of my important files after running it for 24 plus hours.

In terms of speed, it only goes up to 750kb/s when downloading pics or even slower when downloading documents, but goes up much higher when downloading videos. You would think it would go as fast regardless of the file type.

Maybe it's a bad enclosure?
