Monitoring CPU core temps with CoreTemp

I have Windows 8 and Windows 7 installed on two separate drives and use CoreTemp on both installations to monitor my CPU temps on the task bar. One thing I have noticed is that the CPU core temps run 10 degrees warmer on the Windows 8 installation than on the Windows 7 installation. Thinking it might be a software glitch I tried RealTemp as well, but it shows the same readings. I am curious as to why this is happening, so does anybody have any ideas?

Note: I have a stock Intel CPU cooler installed at the moment on an i5 2500k, which is not overclocked.

Have you cleaned out the heatsink fins and/or reapplied a high quality thermal paste on the CPU? I have also seen temp differences between OS's, but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about as long as the temps are in the "normal operating" range. Maybe Win8 has more background processes running that increases the CPU temps?

Hi LittleJay, also check the Minimum Processor State is same in both OS in advanced Power Options, this may be due to different power management.

Yeah, I clean my computer regularly, so dust isn't an issue. I thought about redoing the thermal paste on my Intel CPU cooler, but decided to replace it with a Coolermaster Hyper 2 plus. I haven't checked the advanced power options for Windows 8 and will do so. I will also check to see how many processes I have running in both installtions. Thanks for the tips.

I used fresh arctic Sliver on my CPU and my video card fan/heatsink assembly and it lowered the temps a few degrees. I cleaned it at the same time, so that may have helped, too...

I have ordered the Arctic MX4 thermal compound, along with the Arctic cleaning kit. It should prove an interesting experience, as I have never done a CPU cooler before. :D

It's easy, just remember to clean the top of the CPU (I use rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad, then wipe dry. A tiny amount of compound is all you need! Some people apply it like it's mayonnaise, when a drop the size of a grain of rice is more than adequate. Go slow and have fun!

I haven't gotten the new CPU cooler yet, should arrive early this week, but thought I would take advanatge of the weekend to get things ready. Since two of the holes for mounting the bracket are partially covered by the back of the case, I needed to remove the motherboard to install the cooler. It is a real learning experience for me and it is helping to give me the confidence to build a PC for myself someday. :D

Got my new CPU cooler today and just finished installing it. Hurray! So far the core temps at idle are running around 30-32 degrees, which is much cooler than the stock CPU cooler ever managed. I was thinking I should run a stress test with Prime 95 and see how good of a job it does. So, should I wait for the thermal paste to set up before running the test, or can I do it right away? The test will be a very good indicator on how good of a job I did on installing it.
