Win 8: vanishing CD player + Win Update fail?

Two issues with my latest Win 8 install that I'd be grateful for help with:

    - my DVD/Cd player has disappeared in Device Manager and Explorer!
I've done the reg edit fix for this available online but it hasn't corrected the problem. Also, I've downloaded the free MS Media Centre, which is also supposed to resolve the issue, also without success - I have the media centre function, but no DVD/CD player recognised by the system.
Can anyone help with advice on beating this bug?

    - also, when using Win Update the update Kb2756872 will not install. I've tried doing it manually but, both times, get the 'reverting the changes' error message after restarting.

(For reference, this is the third WIn8 install on this system - both previous ones died after crashes triggered by the hibernate bug, which I've also read is fairly common. This will be my last attempt to get it up and running - and stable. If not, it's back to XP.)

Is your DVD/CD drive showing up in your BIOS? When I've seen this behavior in the past, the drive has failed or is getting ready to fail. Check the BIOS 1st, though... Good luck!

Thanks for that, Azasadny, but there's no issue with the cd/DVD player as it was visible in the bios and read bootable discs without problem.

Rather than continue with Win8, I've reverted to XP out of frustration (and as there were no other replies to this post) and the player is recognised and functions correctly, so clearly another Win8 issue.

What about Win7? Why go back to WinXP? Win7 is very good and stable. I ran it until a month or so ago when I moved to Win8 on my main PC, but I have Win7 on 8 other PC's in the house (incl laptops). I have XP on an old Dell laptop that won't run Win7 because of video driver issues.

I tried Win7 when it came out - and noticed an immediate slow down to my system. That and the fact that it, then, didn't support a video editing package that I used meant that I stayed with XP, which has always proved reliable.

I had hoped Win8 would prove a winner, but - on my initial experience over three installs - it certainly hasn't, though I'll give it another try later in the year. Hopefully the two bugs I mention, and the one that affects many systems after hibernation, will have been patched by then.
