Can anyone tell my why as of yesterday, when I plug my Samsung Galaxy S3 into my downstairs windows 8 machine, it not only fails to show up in my computer, but also deactivates Windows. I actually got so wierded out by that last, that I wound up calling Microsoft. I had just spoken with them a week before this when after installing media center using a free key sent to me from microsoft, the same thing had happened. Windows had gone from activated to de-activated on this one computer. I say this because it may have some bearing. This time, while my phone call with the Philippines dragged on, I searched out the error code on google, and found that the phone being plugged in was the culprit. I unplugged it, pressed activate, and walla.. I was good to go. I plug it in, and I am back to being seen as a miscreant for some reason.

This all worked fine before yesterday. It still works fine on my upstairs computer which is also running Windows 8 pro. I can see the phone in device manager on my downstairs machine where the problem exists. On that machine, I updated all the phone drivers, and updated windows... Still happening. I plug in my Blackberry, it is detected fine, and I can browse files on the phone no problem. I can do the same on my Samsung on my upstairs computer, but what the heck is going on with my downstairs machine?

Any advice appreciated!!

What do you means ? It's the phone connection who is deactivate or the Windows license ? A phone plug on USB should not deactivate the Windows License.

I completely agree with you that it should not deactivate the windows license, but yet.. it does. It is very strange. I am not the only one having this problem according to Google. Even stranger, it happens on one Windows machine, but not the other. My windows license is bought and paid for and should have no problems what-so-ever. I did have an issue when I installed Media center after the fact. I requested a free key from a Microsoft site, and one was mailed to me. After installing media center, my windows became deactivated a few days later. I called Microsoft, and they helped me to re-activate. Everything worked just fine after that until yesterday. I was able to transfer files to the phone in the morning, but when I plugged it in later, no good.. Really weird..

They are two completely different keys, both for media center, and for Windows 8 Pro.. I purchased them both at the 40 dollar upgrade price from Win 7.

Like I say, this worked fine before.. and still works fine on my upstairs computer. Just now a thought occurred. When you plug in a device for the first time, Win 8 prompt and asks you what you would like Win to do when this device is connected. IS it possible that I checked something like 'ignore' by accident, and now this behavior is saved in my system?

I have a similar problem here with the Galaxy S3. Haven't had any problems with Win 8 Pro seeing the phone, but it does randomly deactivate windows. Also, last night my phone seemed to cause some conflict with my Nvidia drivers (310.90). I am fairly sure the phone was at fault, because the Nvidia driver kept crashing even after reboots, until I simply unplugged the phone from USB.
I really hope Microsoft or Samsung releases a fix soon, cause I depend on tethering my phone at work locations.

So did you try to get the galaxy hooked to win 8 while offline? does the same happens?
Win 8 has to hit the server to get activated, or the galaxy alters something in spp folder or triggers deactivation somehow. Sorry, I do not have a Galaxy so I cant test anything however I can bounce ideas and do some research.
I have one HTC PRO 2 windows 6.5 phone and couple iphones, however all working ok.
Does Windows 8 deactivate immediately or you perform some action before?"

No, I haven't had my PC offline with Samsung S3 attached for any considerable length of time. The problem is quite random. Win8 will deactivate about once every other day, or sometimes twice in one day while phone is connected. To re-activate, the phone must be unplugged or I will get the following error:
Error Code: 0xD0000010
Error Description: Unable to find a detailed error description.

The phone may be plugged in for several hours before Windows gives me a message that it is not activated, and I have not figured out any pattern to apps I may be using at the time. The two most commonly used apps on my PC are Firefox and Firestorm Viewer (Second Life Grid Viewer). See the link in my last post in this thread for more people having same problem with Samsung phones and Win8.

I am testing one possible fix. Normally I always connect my S3 to the single USB 3.0 port on my ASUS G73SW. This port requires a special driver to function. So, for a few days I will only connect it to one of my standard USB 2.0 ports and see if Windows will remain activated.

Yes, once phone is unplugged, Win8 has no problems activating. However, if I somehow run out of activations.. there may be a problem.

I'm having the same issue with my Galaxy S3. It's annoying, especially since I've had to rely on tethering for the last couple weeks as my main internet connection. Hopefully MS pushes out a fix soon.
