Office 2007 Kills Synaptics

Weirdo

Every time I open an Office 2007 application, after a few seconds the Synaptics Driver disables. The icon disappears from the taskbar tray and gestures, such as two-finger scrolling and swiping to switch applications or conjure the charms bare, stop working.

When I open the mouse properties, I get a dialogue box saying, "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pionting Device Driver." It suggests that perhaps I installed another mouse driver (which I have not) and they're conflicting, and asks me if I want to uninstall the Synatpics Driver. After I click no and dig into the mouse properties, the Device Settings tab clearly indicates that Synaptics is, in fact, enabled.

If I close Office, sometimes Synaptics will come back on. But if I reopen it, Synaptics is gone again.

Synaptics also sometimes comes back on if I leave the mouse properties window open. When I close mouse properties, however, Synaptics dies again.

I only have this issue when using Office 2007. Otherwise, Synaptics works fine.

My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad U410 that I got only a few days ago. It runs regular (non-pro) Windows 8.

Why is Office disabling Synaptics? How can I fix this issue?

I would appreciate any help you guys can give.

First place to look:
Lenovo Support - Drivers & Software (US)

But it seems there are only Win7 drivers available. Try those. It's the only way.
But they do offer Win8 upgrades so as usual, the Win7 drivers should work in most cases.

Thanks for trying, but my problem persists.

There is, in fact, an available Windows 8 driver:

Unfortunately, uninstalling my Synaptics driver and replacing it with this one changed nothing. I suspected this might happen, since the version number of this driver is the same as the one that was pre-installed on my laptop, even though the Lenovo page claims the driver was updated on December 26.

So re-installing the Synaptics driver doesn't fix the problem.

Any other ideas about how I can prevent Synaptics from turning off every time I open Office 2007?
