    Mac hard drive on Windows?

I was recently given an external hard drive (a LeCie enclosure, but it looks to be running a Maxtor inside) to take files off of and edit on my PC. The person who gave it to me primarily uses Mac computers. When I plugged the drive into my computer (via USB), it was not recognized as a drive. While Device Manager sees it, and I can see it under Disk Management, it appears unallocated, and does not show up under My Computer. My guess is that it's formatted with a different file system that Windows likely doesn't support.

My question is, is there any way to go about using this hard drive, without losing any of the files? Am I correct in saying that there is an alternate file system, or is there another problem here? Any ideas?
