I downloaded Windows 8 Pro a week ago

My old Lexmark X5650 absolutely won't work with it. I get the NT Error and have given up on the printer. The print driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer. NT 4.0 drivers.

Now my wireless internet has slowed to a crawl. I called Comcast and they said check the speed by going directly from the router to my Ethernet

I tried that and it says invalid IP

The router is a Motorola SB5101U

The Computer is a HP Pavilion dv4

I tried going back to the recovery point I set and it isn't there.

I am getting no Windows 8 updates so I turned the automatic off and tried one by one but it couldn't locate any. Failure converting windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer. Code 8024402F

I am at my parents for Christmas and don't have my recovery disks. I guess I am going to wait until next week when I get home and start the computer over from scratch with Windows 7, unless someone has suggestions.

I am even ready for Cheese with my whine !

Thanks for letting me vent Susan.

Pavilion dv4 isn't a model, it's a series. If you supply the model, we can look at the driver situation.

You may need drivers that aren't included with Win8. Windows 7 drivers will usually serve, if they exist.

NT 4.0 drivers? What's up with that? Lexmark doesn't even list those for download. (The X5650 isn't that old. They are still listed for sale, new.)

You may also wish to try a clean install of Win8. That'll blow everything away, just like going back to Win7.

Best of luck.

Anne, I've given this advice from the beginning. If you have Windows 7, it has a built-in drive partitioner. Instructions are easy to find on the internet.

Partition your hard drive and download the free Windows 8 Preview Version from MS onto it. Then download the $40 Windows Pro onto the Preview Edition. (Yes, it is legal, and after scanning your computer, MS will even say that they can install Win 8 Pro). It should work perfectly. Then drag any program you want, using "My Computer" or a thumb drive.

That's what I did, and I love the way that Windows 8 works. A few old programs run better on 7, so I use it for them.

Drivers are here:

Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv4-1287cl Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

HP doesn't supply any Windows 8 drivers for this laptop. The Windows 7 drivers will probably work. Run them as administrator. Try the troubleshooting mode if any of them are reluctant to install.

I still don't understand some of what you wrote. It sounds like Comcast suggested that you connect your laptop to the router with a wired connection. That sounds like a good idea. If it didn't work, you probably need drivers for your NIC (network interface controller).

Some missing drivers may be indicated by the yellow exclamation points in Device manager. See anything there?

Vince53's idea is all right, as far as it goes. The main problem that I can see with it is that the Win8 preview may no longer be available for download from Microsoft. It may still be floating around the Web, but be cautious about downloading; you risk exposure to Trojan horses.

From reading your post, I assume you chose to UPDATE your lappy instead of a fresh install.
After having now converted several computers from Windows 7 to Windows 8, it is My opinion that the update route is no good! It seems to only cause a LOT of problems and heartache.
The only way to install Windows 8, is to go the fresh install route - ie since you downloaded it, put the files on a disk and boot the laptop with the disk in and do a new install from the disk. All your folders for downloads/pictures/music etc will be saved to a windows.old folder. You should find that windows 8 loads faultlessly, everything should work as before and you will have minimal need to download new drivers. You can retrieve all your old pics etc out of the windows.old folder and replace them in the windows 8 folders. You can even replace your email addresses and documents as well. All your old stuff is still there, you just need to move it back into the Win8 folders.

Hang in there, Anne; we're on your side! The free Windows preview is available until January 15, 2013. And yes, decades of experience have shown that a clean install is usually better than an upgrade.

Yes, I would do a clean install, redownload Windows 8, there will be a screen that says to make a bootable .iso image that you can do a clean install with.

The problem with upgrading is that it carries over the gunk and crap from the previous version of Windows, so your new version has gunk from the old.

All right since I last vented, Comcast took care of my connection there were issues. Now it is very fast again. The only problem I am still having is getting my Lexmark X5650 printer hooked up.

When I try I still get this message:

Print Driver was not installed. The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers.

Is there an easy way to change the policy to allow thru settings of some sort?

Thanks again and Merry Christmas to all ! Anne

No, the damage is not done! Still go and do a fresh install, all it means is that you will end up with a folder named WINDOWS.OLD (the newest one) and a folder named WINDOWS.OLD.000 (the older folder) and this is where all you old settings will be found.
It is a little bit of work to restore everything, but the info is all out there on the web, and you might just find that the printer work properly for you once it is done. Windows 8 seems to be pretty up to date with most of the drivers.
Just checked the compatability center and your printer should be okay, but you will need to do the fresh install. It seems that upgrading only causes conflicts between the old and the new system.

Which drivers are you trying to install? I picture trying to install XP drivers from a CD that shipped with the printer. I hope that I'm wrong about that.

The latest drivers I see at Lexmark are for Windows 7. They may well work without much messing around.

http://support.lexmark.com/index?lo...ductCode=LEXMARK_X5650&focusedTab=DOWNLOADS#1

I'd try a link for the exact drivers, but I don't see any mention of whether you're running a 32 or 64 bit OS.

Microsoft claims that the X5650 is compatible:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win8/CompatCenter/ProductViewerWithDefaultFilters?TempOsid=win8&Locale=en-us&TextSearch=lexmark%2Bx5650&Type=Both&CurrentPage=0&TotalPages=1&ShowCriteria=0&SortCriteria=Relevance&Compatibility=Unknown&LastRequested=14

That suggests that Win8 includes drivers for it. However, as it's an all-in-one, not all functions may be supported by the drivers included with Win8.

Happy Kwanzaa.

Cool!!
Just did a fresh install on my laptop (got Win8 for Christmas for it) got to the Metro page (the new start button) and was changing a few tiles around. Suddenly up popped the buttons for my printer.
So lappy is hooked wireless to the network into which the printer is connected (not even active), Windows 8 sees it and goes off on its own and loads up the correct drivers for it and hey-presto, there is your printer ready to go. Pretty neat!!
I go into Device Manager, and there is not one yellow mark at all. Everything is accounted for and everyone is working just as it should.
That is one BIG plus for windows 8. If your system is at all compatible, Windows 8 installs all of the drivers you need as it is loading - automatic, no thinking about it. And no, it is not a new laptop, it is about 3 years old.

Could someone please show me the link for the preview referenced and give me the best steps to do it properly? Thanks

Anne, you should not need to do that. Just put the files you downloaded onto a disk and boot the computer with the disk in (make sure your boot order is dvd drive first in bios. It will then ask you to push any button to boot from disk and then will start the installation.
Just remember not to go with the update option - you will need to choose custom setup I think it is called.

I am sorry that I am confused :( Do you mean the files Microsoft sent me when I bought Windows 8 PRO? They sent me files for the 32 bit not the 64 bit I want/need to get thing straightened out. Doing what I think your saying won't get me to the 64 bit will it, if I bought the 32 bit download?

I had read that you can do it by going to the preview link etc.

Ah okay, did not understand that. No I think you would still end up with a 32 bit version, but I am not sure.
If you can, the best way would be to just go out a buy the boxed PRO disks. Then you get both 32 and 64 versions for about $50 where I am.

I assume that you acquired the upgrade using the Upgrade Assistant.

As far as I know, that only gives you the Win8 version that matches the "bitness" of the Windows version you ran the Assistant from. If you wanted the 64 bit version, you would have had to buy it from a 64 bit OS. I don't give MS a lot of credit for this. It may simplify support for them, but it denies a lot of people the opportunity to switch to 64 bit using a downloaded copy. Or, it forces them to spend the extra $30 (in the US) for the retail upgrade package.

I believe that a 32 bit license key would work with the 64 bit OS. The problem would be finding a way to download the 64 bit installer.

It should work, after all you only get one registration key when you buy the boxed set of disks and have both versions.
