I gave up iPad for Microsoft Surface

The original iPad didn't excite me very much. In fact, I was confused what to do with it. Over time, I ended up using the iPad 2, and recently its successor. I’ve also tried the Blackberry PlayBook, the HP TouchPad, and more recently Google Nexus 7. But, for the first time in a long time, I was very excited to get a tablet -- the new Microsoft Surface. I think Windows RT had a lot to do with it, and the touchscreen aspect.
I worried about the new operating system being touch-based. “How will I use Excel or PowerPoint, or other applications in Windows RT if they are all tile-based?” The good news: I learned that the Windows Desktop is still accessible. So while there normally are lots of tiles, when you start to edit a document, you go back to a familiar desktop and normal Office -- well, its Office 2013 -- so that's cool, too.

it's the ''going back to the familiar desktop'' that makes me think the surface and it's alternatives will do well in the market place in the longer term.

having what is essentially a full o/s in rt and the full o/s on the pro versions for many will make them wonder what they can do with a tablet now.

don't get me wrong i like android sort of, but i find it rather counter intuative for some tasks and perfect for others.

Hi there
did the OP or the blogger he's referred to in his post actually get his hands yet on a production model Surface Pro -- even now in most parts of the world these are still purely in the realms of Vaporware. He probably was using the RT which is a totally different animal entirely. As an Ipad replacement the RT might be OK (certainly cheaper) but I think most people are waiting for the Surface PRO.

In fact he was using the RT - so the title of the post is a bit misleading. I wanted to see a review of the SURFACE PRO !!!.

Quote from the article / blog ......Surface RT has a nice wide screen. One of the best features is the multi-user support. A lot of people ask me about Surface and each time they hear it can handle multiple users, the light bulb goes off -- such an obvious feature! The feature isn't anything new to Microsoft, but it is a very seamless process on Surface RT. Given that most................

The Surface Pro was promised for Early Jan -- we are nearly in Feb now and I haven't seen a single working RETAIL (available for public purchase) model of these anywhere yet.

Seems like they (Ms and whatever company / set of companies / who is / are actually building the hardware have still got some last minute production bugs before these things are finally released out of the door into the mits of "the Great Unwashed".

If this is so - I'd be very hesitant to buy any of the first batch -- I'd await a while before considering one of these -- and my views would be quite typical.

This therefore doesn't quite look like the promising new start for Ms with mobile devices.

Cheers
jimbo

No, the Surface Pro was promised about 90 days after the Surface RT, which by if you take that literally, will be in two days. But considering Microsoft usually does things Tuesday, could be next week as they have said something is planned for the 29th, along with the Windows Phone 7.8 rollout set for the 31st.

There has been a review of the physical product, and it seems to have been reviewed well. It was done by The Verge, normally known to give weird scores because they define the standard as being apple products.
