Hi everyone,

First time here and I've got myself a small problem.
I thought I'd see for myself what win8 was about and upgraded (if thats the right word) from win7

I have a Toshiba laptop (some tech info is at the end of this post)

The install went really well. Win 8 started and I'm getting interested then I realise my DVD/CD has disappeared.
Sure enough Device Manager indicates a problem and says

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

I deleted the device, did a rescan and the problem remained.

I tried updating the driver over the internet and was told the best available driver was present.

I have downloaded and installed all Win 8 updates.

This laptop did not come with any disks. Win 7 was pre-installed by Toshiba and has a recovery partition only.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards, John

Thanks HBHB.. The link did the trick

  1. At the Start screen type system config and select "System Configuration"
  2. Disable the service named "TOSHIBA Optical Disk Drive Service".
  3. Go to "Device manager" and Right click on the matshita CD-Rom and uninstall the driver.
  4. From the menu select "Rescan for devices"
  5. It then automatically re-installed what appears to be the "default" windows driver and fixes the issue.

The trick is to disable the service before uninstalling the driver.
Seems to me the Toshiba driver isn't supported, however it worked well during the cd-rom install.

Thanks to all for your help
