An android, maybe but the tablet app ecosystem I've been hearing is literally just blown up versions of the phone apps and aren't that great. The OS isn't that great.
Personally having used both devices, I think the iPad is more superior just because the usability is fluid and easy to achieve what you want to achieve, android OS is just fail after fail, doesn't seem to actually evolve, same stuff with a few bells and whistles, surface RT isn't going to be as demanded as pro version, people want to use windows programs with a windows tablet, the RT is a bad move on microsoft's part, i think they should have scrapped the RT version of the tablet all together (and reserved the OS for other devices using ARM processors), and stuck with the Pro and priced it the same as the RT is now.
Honestly, I don't see a use for the ipad other than some content consumption. Trying to make the ipad work like a PC is getting a bird to drive a car, it's simply not set up to do that. Now, for people that do need SOME other things that would call for a PC but not over the top, something in between an ipad and a PC, the Surface RT and Windows RT fits that bill. If I didn't need to use certain programs locally installed, I would just go for the Surface RT, maybe do a remote desktop connection to my home puter when I need it, maybe get a prepaid 4G USB modem. RT is more in general the OS for people that need Office software, USB and expanded storage, but don't need over the top hardware like an i5 for their needs. RT is between an ipad and a traditional Windows PC in terms of capabilities.

I think I might be waiting longer as there is a rumor from a rather credible source saying that next year's Surface lineup will be expanded and probably cost less as well.

Apparently, the Surface RT will go down to an 8.6 inch screen and will use Qualcomm chips over NVIDIA. What would be the Surface Pro might drop the i5 for an AMD APU designed for tablets, with a new screen size of 11.6 inches. A new Surface tablet, called Surface Book, will have an Intel chip and a 14 inch screen.

I might want the new Surface Pro with the APU....

Shoot, I probably have to consider need over want and if I can wait it out.

I don't think you've ever owned a Tablet PC. I've owned 2 of them. A Toshiba M200 6 years ago and an HP TX. The Toshiba was much better than the HP but, at the end of the day, they were both laptops which equates to heavy. The functionality was very good. They both spun/flipped around to become a 'heavy' tablet. When there were no other choices, they served their purpose.

Now that we have the Surface RT and, soon, the Pro, these will truly be game changers. With a quick pull, you can take off the keyboard and you now have a tablet. So, like the Ipad, you can surf the web, play games, watch a movie, etc. Then, when you have to go back to work mode, snap the keyboard back on and do some work. Can't do that with a tablet PC.

It's all about what you are willing to pay for your needs. Do you want a toy? Get an Ipad and save $400 dollars. Do you want to work and play? Get an RT or Pro and be productive when you need to be and play when you can.

To play the Surface Pro is under power with the Intel IGP. To work the Surface pro is under power with the 10" monitor. So for me it's a toy

Yes, a toy for some. For others, a laptop replacement but definitely not a toy.

It's all about perspective. If you want to compare it to an Ipad, then the two are just about equal. In all fairness, I would give the Ipad the edge because of the number of apps and better screen resolution. But, both toys get the job done for surfing, reading, gaming. One just lets you work also.

Gaming ? what game you play, Solitaire, Farmville ? Even Minecraft suck on an Intel IGP, my point is that you will never replace a Desktop with a toy.

Though I have "8" back on my laptop system I'm not planning to "go tablet" with it. I'm only using it on this machine so I can keep an eye on it as a developer. I've already got iPads and iPhones (which work fine along side my Windows systems) so I don't need any more hardware right now. I've invested a fair amount in the Apple ecosystem as a result. Not going to re-invest in the Windows ecosystem beyond what I use on my desktop type machines. Either version of the "Surface" would just be a money hole to me right now.

Gaming as compared to an Ipad/Android tablet. The experience is the same when playing Words for Friends, Where's my Water, Angry Birds, etc. Essentially time wasters when bored at the coffee shop or waiting for the next meeting.

As a hardcore PC gamer with hundreds of games (Diablo 3, Xcom Enemy Unknown, Bioshocks, Mass Effects, Deus Ex's, Far Cry 3, Crysis 2, etc), you are correct, I would never use the Surface for those. For that, I have my home built, Window 8 gaming rig. You simply can't replace a desktop for PC gaming.
