but then, when i restart my pc and i try to connect it again, it works...

    Hi there
How do you REMOVE the phone -- do you just unplug it or do you use the EJECT hardware button. With an ACTIVE device like a smartphone you should always use the EJECT / REMOVE hardware button before unplugging the device.

I'd also check before plugging it into the computer again that the Blue tooth connection if enabled is switched off as Bluetooth and usb connected at the same time can hose up the connections.

Also if you connect it via a USB hub make sure the hub is a powered one since the phone will also attempt to CHARGE the battery while connected to the computer.

I've rarely had USB problems with my Galaxy S3 phone and W8.

Install the SAMSUNG KIES application -- you don't have to run the application but it installs the drivers so you get the phone icon when you plug the phone into the USB icon.

I don't have the experience or patience to extract the drivers only from the KIES application but the thing works fine.

    Kies Samsung

Enc scr shoot when plugging phone into USB -- I've plugged it in and unplugged it loads of times --works fine.

    cheers

I have only recently started having problems with Win8 detecting my Galaxy S3. I have tried numerous USB driver uninstall, reboot, re-installs. Including the USB driver that electrotune1200 mentioned, the useless Kies application, and driver included with PDAnet. The problem started yesterday 3/19/13, and haven't installed any new apps on either the phone or PC recently. I just ran a malware scan with negative results. Next step will be to to try system restore. I doubt that will help.. but I'm about out of options. Next time I get a new phone, I'm going back to Motorola.

*update 3 hours of headaches later*
I finally got the S3 connecting again.. not entirely sure how, but here is what happened:
While installing some totally unrelated Win8 updates, I uninstalled one of the many samsung USB drivers I had been trying. When my PC went to reboot, I plugged my phone back in at about the same time the Win8 logo popped up during restart.
Once booted up, Android phone now showed in my Device Manager. I installed only the USB driver included with PDAnet and now I am up and tethering again ^_^.
Why this worked I have no clue.. I had already tried rebooting with the phone plugged up, but perhaps having the drivers un-installed did the trick. I was getting ready to factory reset my phone, which is no easy task sense it is rooted, and Odin would not connect.

Never had a problem with this -- the Galaxy IIIs Mini works fine as well. I only installed the drivers though -- couldn't be bothered with the complete KIES stuff though.

@ Cokerobot -- maybe you don't have a problem with W8 phones because they can't connect in the first place so no problem. !!

hey, is that how your samsung phone shows in windwos 7 too ?? with that generic icon or with its proper icon instead??

i installed itunes and then plugged my ipad 2 but in windows 8 is showing the same generic icon as your screenshot, however in windows 7 it shows the cute ipad icon.

have you tried connecting other devices that have its own icon ??
