Solved Printer driver thrown out of the Window

We are in the throes of getting used to Win8 on a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 64bit). Quite a culture shock coming from Vista!
Our inkjet is an elderly Canon IP 5000, still giving good service. However the driver cd is tossed out by Windows 8. Printer documentation says:
'USB operation can only be guaranteed on a PC with preinstalled Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me or Windows 98'.
No mention even of Vista, which gives you a good idea of its age! However it offends me to throw out a perfectly good device, for which cartridges are still freely available.
I have contacted Canon, but there's total silence.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to my world, I am having issues getting official drivers for my product(hp laserjet printer).
I have manage to survive by doing e-printing. NOT HAPPY though, I also heard of Google Print, I haven't tried it mainly because it requires Google chrome browser and the contents of your print job are at their disposal in order "to improve" the service. Those two reasons are enough for me to just use the printer at work and e-printing at home.

As much as I dislike Google, I am in this forum to help others. You may want to look into Google Print, no drivers needed :)

At Canon:

Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : PIXMA iP5000

it lists for Windows 8 X64:

"There is no driver for the
OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not
need a driver."

The Microsoft Update catalog lists a driver for the iP5000 as for Windows 8:

Microsoft Update Catalog

although the driver is actually from 2006 (pre-Vista).

Win8 didn't include drivers for the printer right out of the box? It certainly did for my old Brother HL-5150D laser printer. They're pretty functional drivers, too, although there are none for the Postscript emulator.
