Windows 8 cannot see harddrive

Hi,

I installed Windows 8 Pro 64 today on my computer and everything is working fine, the only problem I have is that Windows 8 is not able to recognize hard drive 6/6. My SSD, where Windows 8 is running on, is fine, as well as 4 of my normal hard drives. I cannot even see the missing hard drive when I go to the disc management, so there's no Unallocated space that could indicate my missing hard drive. I tried reinstalling my chipset driver and SATA driver...

Thanks,
canam

There's always a chance your sata or power cable is loose and happened coincidentally with your upgrade. You probably already checked that.

I had one of my five drive letters vanish for no known reason and I had an error message saying the drive could not be found, .but it came back on reboot. That had never happened to me in Win 7. Good luck.

I have the same or very similar problem. I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with a secondary HDD (Maxtor 6L100M0), which works perfectly with Win 7 but not recognized by Win 8. By perfectly, I mean Disk Management can format it and add, remove or resize partitions with no problems. The Win 8 Disk Management utility launches a dialog box to initialize the disk, which ends with an error message (I've seen three different ones, none of which provide any clue to solving the problem).

I did the following to try isolating the problem and got interesting results.
- Removed hard drive and connected via external USB enclosure: worked perfectly with Win 8.
- Moved similar hard drive (same model but 160 GB instead of 100, both mfg'd in 2005) from other desktop, and it worked perfectly with Win 8.

I hate stopping short of finding root cause but decided to spring for a new hard drive (WD Blue 250 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA III, 16 MB Cache for $54 on Amazon) and keep the mystery HDD as an external drive.
