Windows 8 Problems

Hi,

I've been having quite a bit of random trouble since installing Windows 8 with poor performance of some programs at times and random freezing/crashing.

Yesterday I noticed in the Action Center that the disk was being checked for errors and fixed and since then the system seems to have been working fine.

I have noticed now, though, that on startup now on the initial black screen I see an "error occurred" message next to Physical Device Port 0 Device Model ST31000528AS. I'm assuming this means I have a problem with the hard disk and more problems are only around the corner.

I never had any trouble with this computer on Windows 7, please could you give me any advice on how to sort this out ?

Thanks in advance

It is possible that when installing windows 8, you used up a lot of previously unused disk space and ran into some bad spot on the drive that was just sitting there untouched previously.

Depending on the drive type you may be able to go to the manufacturers site and download a diagnostic tool to scan the drive with.

I recently had to do that to a WD drive that started showing SMART errors during the BIOS boot. There was a large bad spot that sucked up ALL the remaining sector remap space and so if I write ANYTHING further to the drive and it hit's that bad spot the drive will corrupt the data, possibly the formatting even. Had to buy a new drive to replace it :(
