Installation of old ATA hard drive into new windows 8 comp

I have a nine year old Dell computer with an ATA hard drive and a brand new Dell 8500 Windows 8 computer. I would like to be able to use some programs on the old ATA hard drive (Quicken, Quick Books Pro) but my new system will not allow me install the older programs.
I have figured out how to install the older hard drive into my new system but I am not sure if the programs will work once I install the old hard drive into the new computer. So..

Will the older hard drive work as a secondary drive in the new system?
Will I have to re-install Windows XP on the old drive once I install the hard drive?
Will the Windows XP software that came with the old Dell system re-install onto the old hard drive once the old hard drive is installed into the new system as a secondary drive?
Will I have to re-install the programs I would like to use that are on the old hard drive, once I install the hard drive into my new system?

Not going to work I'm afraid.

The older drive will work as a secondary drive.

If you are actually going to try and boot up to the XP install, then yes, odds are you'll have to reinstall. It's likely to crash trying to run the old drivers on the new hardware. At the very least you'll have to reactivate. If it was an OEM install activation will likely fail.

The old software on the old drive will not re-install on its own, and it won't be usable in Windows 8.

Yes you will have to reinstall the programs in Windows 8 for them to work in Windows 8. Just slaving the drive in will not magically make them work on the new system. Some stand alone programs that don't rely on reg entries may work but I'd be surprised if the programs you mentioned work without a reinstall. Copying them from one drive to the other won't work either.
